International Food Fair Wednesday at Lake Land



MATTOON — The International Student Association and Student Activity Board are hosting an International Food Fair Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center.

Plates are $6 and include six different dishes, such as Korean beef from Southeast Asia, sweet potato fritter from South Africa and havla, a honey, sugar and almond dessert from the Middle East.

The public is welcome but advance tickets are required.

To order tickets for the food fair, call 234-5434.

This event, along with several others, is part of the college’s celebration of International Education Week.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, the fifth annual IEW will emphasize the importance of international education and promote campus involvement in international programs. At Lake Land, the event is hosted by the International Student Association.

“By being part of this nation-wide effort, students get to connect to their campuses and the United States’ education system,” said Katie Lotz, director of the international studies program.

In addition, the month of November has also been designated as “Multicultural Awareness Month” at Lake Land. Along with the sampling of international cuisine, here is a list of other activities going on:

n Monday — International Education Week Kickoff Party. Students can stop by Laker Point from noon to 2 p.m. to help celebrate the beginning of International Education Week. There will be music, free drinks and giveaways

n Tuesday — Lake Land ping pong international tournament. Students can take a few moments to experience a sport with worldwide popularity at 3 p.m. in Webb Hall 081. There is a $10 registration fee to compete, which includes a T-shirt. Prizes include a $100 gift card and an iPod Nano.

n Wednesday — International Round Table. What’s it like to grow up in another country? Stop by the theater at 11 a.m. and listen to students from Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Benin, Philippines and Bahrain.

n Thursday — International Student Panel at the Kluthe Center for Higher Education and Technology. Participants can hear the experiences of several international students at 1 p.m.. There will be a question and answer period.

n Friday — The Art of Mendhi. These temporary tattoos done with henna will be created on participants from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Student Center lobby.
