OUR VIEW: Spit at each other, then shake hands

It's the American way: Get in the national political ring, fight it out with blood, sweat and tears, then take off the gloves and shake hands. One competitor wins, and the other gives a gracious concession speech and leaves the ring.

Now that the long, grueling presidential campaign for 2008 is over, this is what Americans will do again. It's part of the beauty of this system that is the foundation of the United States.

But many Republicans and other John McCain backers feel the pain as they consider reaching out to shake hands with Democrats and other Barack Obama supporters. Their knuckles remain bruised and tender from a tough campaign in which their candidate was battered by his opponent. McCain winced under ridiculous claims such as accusations that he would tinker with Social Security, or derisions aimed at his running mate, whom some claimed was inexperienced, a "diva," or worse.

The nonsense goes both ways. Although soothed by the decision in Obama's favor by most American voters, Democrats and their allies still are stung by silly claims that Obama "pals around with terrorists," or wants to bring socialism to this country.

There were plenty of dirty tricks on both sides. Discouragingly, that seems to be how American politics always plays out.

Yet — again, as is the American way — we recognize that there remains common ground. Surely all can acknowledge the moment in history we have just witnessed: the first black president selected to lead this nation. Obama broke barriers that had existed for all of this country's past, and his ascent to the White House brings a unique hope to blacks and other minorities across this land.

This was a historic election for women, too. Never have women in both parties come so close to winning an unprecedented role in the White House. There is progress yet to be made, but it will continue to be built on the foundation of past strides that have strengthened the foundation for equal rights, and equal opportunity.

Let McCain supporters ease their disappointment by finding portions of Obama's agenda that they can support. Let Obama's proponents resist the temptation for gloating or smugness and humbly reach out for help from the other side.

As has been said many times, we Americans have much more that unites us than should divide us. The challenges of our time — including economic crises, national security issues, and the goal of energy independence — affect us all, and take all of us to help forge a path to a solution.

We may not forget the tough campaign leading up to the next presidential administration, but we can allow ourselves to heal and look forward. As in most things in life, it's a two-way street.

Let's all just sing "qoom ba YAH" and forget about all the vitriol spewed by the left, democrats and liberals about President Bush and perpetuated by biased "JOURNALISTS" in this country.

How about Obama insinuating that our troops are "just air raiding villages and killing civilians"?

Ridiculous claims...what about the "Bush Knew" Headlines by the New York Times after 9/11?

My personal favorite vitriol, as of late, San Francisco wanting to name their sewage plant after President Bush. Now that was class....

How about all the nasty comments by so called analysts like Olberman, Maddow, and who ever else "professional journalists"?

Now there's an oxymoron....

How about some truly "un-biased" reporting from "journalists" for say...the next millennium....?

And maybe try to be conscience of their own political bias?

Funny, I don't recall the local newspaper "all up in arms" during the last 8 years over comments about President Bush....at all.

It seems to me maybe "journalists" ought to apologize to the nation for inflaming peoples political passions might go a long way. Why don't you try giving the NYT, LA Times, all the other media spewers a call and tell them to apologize to the nation?

Hey, you've always got Fox news, and we all know how unbiased they are, right?

I see you're still trying to blame the media on McCain's loss, huh. It couldn't possibly be because of Bush's failures, could it now? LOL!

And are you slipping? You forgot to call Obama a socialist or a commie in the last rant.

And lastly, about that sewage plant: I thought that was quite a tribute and after the stink Bush has caused for our our nation, quite fitting. Sorry you didn't agree. "

As for McCain...McCain can blame his loss on himself. The addition of Palin increased his credibility with conservatives (myself included) but McCain-Feingold came back to bite him in the rear end....so I don't shed any tears for McCain.

All I say is Carter, California, and Illinois...enuf said. Hopefully in 2 years all the RINO's will get shaken out ...and some new blood conservative republicans will be back in the congress. By the way big thank you to Illinois Rep Tim Johnson for voting AGAINST the bail-out. Vote against the bailout for GM and Ford too.

I'm not slipping, he's still "the messiah" ....and a socialist. With "the messiahs" voting record to the left of Bernie Sander's (Sander's calls himself a socialist)...what more needs said?

Wouldn't it be rich if GWB, by executive order, named the sewage plant in San Francisco after Obama.

To The Question...

That was really a desert...

I think it is great that we get something new in the White House. Unfortunately I don't think its enough. You can tell by these very posts what kind of situation America is really in and it isn't going to be solved by either of these two parties. It is time for real change in the US no more of this corporate run government. I don't think Obama or any other candidate running on a Republican or Democratic ticket is the real answer. Until there is a real choice instead of the lesser of two evils this country is going no where fast. It is time for Americans to re-evaluate their morals and positions, and vote for someone that actually has similar beliefs. We have become to superficial voting the way we think makes us look good. It is time to stand up for what we really believe in, for the values we actually follow. Until we start voting with our actual minds and not on what the media tells us. Everyone says Obama had so much media exposure and he did but McCain had 10 times as much as any 3rd party candidate. It is time to wake up and not just watch our country fall apart. "

Hey Neo, google the term tent cities in usa. You'll find that the government isn't bailing out it's citizens. It's bailing out millionairs on wall street. This is current history. Today! The US government bails out (through corporate subsidies) corporate America 4000 TIMES MORE than they do it's citizens. So yes, welfare is rampant today. But it's not the hungry, homeless and jobless getting anything. It's CEOs, AT&T, Oil Companies along with their historical, astronomical profits. So if you have a problem with welfare, there's where your tax money is going. Stop berating the less fortunate. Go ask the nearest homeless person if they will go to work tomorrow. Guess what answer you'll get. "

" Right Becky, the Republicans give all our money to the rich people. I can't say whether or not the bailout is the right plan, but if major banks or auto companies go under, it will affect much more than the bonuses of some CEO's. I've read that one out of ten jobs in the US are auto related.

As far as your myth about GOP corporate welfare, read this report from the CATO inst. on the Clinton administration's record of corporate welfare. Pay special attention to one of the Repub's who fought it. You might have heard of him, John McCain.

http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-254.html

Corporate welfare creates a "bidding war". The companies throw money at candidates in order to be the biggest recipients of the cash cow. It's rampant on both sides.

Now, you claim that "poor" people do not get any money. Well in 2006, the federal government spent more than $477 billion on some 50 different programs to fight poverty. That amounts to $12,892 for every poor man, woman, and child in this country. And it does not even begin to count welfare spending by state and local governments. In fact, despite nearly $9 trillion in total welfare spending since Lyndon Johnson declared War on Poverty in 1964, the poverty rate is perilously close to where it was when we began, more than 40 years ago. (http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=6698)

Read the report's conclusions about the negative impacts of throwing money at the poverty problem. They go on to say that private charities are far more efficient at helping the poor. Look into how many homes the Government has built in New Orleans compared to Habitat for Humanity. Maybe you can understand why I don't want them to manage my health care.

Most of the problems in our economy can basically be boiled down to one thing, greed. Unfortunately, greedy people will always find risky ventures with other people's money where they can line their own pockets. Average Joe is just as much to blame. We demand corporate profits to pad our 401k's and then we buy the cheap Chinese junk at Walmart, while leaving the US made products on the shelves and can't figure out why our jobs go overseas.

We also get to witness our congress pointing fingers at each other instead of finding long term solutions. They play us off against one another or against the rich/poor people in order to keep the focus off of their incompetence. We could have sent them all packing a couple of weeks ago, but we said, "good job, keep it up". The only thing we managed to "change" was the name on the Whitehouse mailbox. "

Harry Potter wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:56 PM:

" Corporate welfare comes in a lot of different shapes, forms and sizes. Right here in Coles county the airport is a good example of that. There are no flights coming in or leaving that place other than private planes. Why should the tax payers continue to subsidize that operation. Privatization is the oft heard Republican mantra. I say fine, sell it off to the highest bidder, and stop gouging the tax payers for it's operation costs. "

My wife deals with many low-income families in her job and I hear how people on aid have big-screen TV's and nice Harleys in their driveways. They also seem to have plenty of money to spend on alcohol and cigarettes, meanwhile their kids rely on donated winter coats and free food. Very few people in this country know what real poverty is. In other countries, I have seen little kids dive into raw sewage just to retrieve coins. Many kids in our country living in the "poverty" level have Xbox's and get free health care. The current system of throwing money at poverty doesn't work. THAT is change we need. I don't have a problem with my tax money buying a low-income family a loaf of bread, but I don't want to buy their Marlboros or pay for them to have more kids that they can't afford. "

Harry...Harry... Harry.....

First of all... I am a conservative and not necessarily a Republican. I will speak, however, for how RINOS can get back into power....

NO... republicans don't need to broaden their base...they need to get back to their Reaganesque, conservative roots of strong defense, de-regulation, low taxes, pro-jobs, and free markets.

As for Republicans situation now...they should have known that when they put Illinoise very own Denny Hastert in as Speaker of the House that he would allow every earmark possible to be voted on. Not very conservative.

So here we are now with "the messiah" in the Whitehouse in January with socialist henchmen Piglosi and Weid in the House and Senate.

Democrats have broadened their base...just like they always do.... and become beholden to every special interest there is.....

As for corporate welfare....

"A survey of the paper losses suffered by 175 chief executives of American companies shows that they lost a total of $52.3 billion through Oct. 27, when the stock market hit lows that were tested this past week.

The bulk of the loss went to a handful of chief executives who were also company founders and therefore owned a lot of stock. On average, the richest 10 percent of bosses - just 18 people - lost $2.2 billion each. That was only a 33 percent drop, however - much smaller losses proportionately than their less wealthy colleagues'."
