LETTER: Country was ambushed in recent campaign
By JERRY CIZEK, Greenup
Ambushed, that's the only way to describe what has just happened to this country.
The Democrats sat on their hands for at least 4 or 5 years, doing absolutely nothing, and hoping the Republican party would self-destruct, which they did.
Barack Obama did not introduce any major bills to benefit us in the last few years, either in Illinois or on the national level.
Along with this, Christopher Dodd, Shumer, and others headed the oversight committees that should have had a handle on what was going on with our financial institutions.
This, with Acorn, who pressured lending institutions to make loans to people that could ill-afford to buy high priced homes, that in turn helped cause the collapse of our economy.
But they saw they could blame everything on the George Bush administration, and that is exactly what they did.
It's pure and simple. They sold out the country for their own political gain.
Add to the above, why hasn't anyone mentioned that the energy fiasco, with gasoline and diesel fuel at $4 a gallon, which had a big negative effect on travel, the tourism industry, food prices, agricultural commodities, etc?
This was due to the Democrats and a few liberal Republicans not allowing drilling in the fertile oil fields, environmental suppression for development of clean fossil fuels, no new nuclear power plants, no new refineries.
Again, thank you Democrat leaders for ambushing America.
Slick talking got you into power, so now let's see what you can do with the MESS you created.
All of the above enabled the Democrats to veer public opinion and concerns away from the very successful war with Iraq, National Security and other issues that were important.
And John McCain and his advisers, like George Bush, took the "high road" and Obama took the low road.
He lied to the Republicans and changed his position on Public Financing, which affected the waning days of McCain's campaign tremendously.
President-elect Barack Obama will have to earn the respect of a lot of citizens in the U.S.and many of our allies.
As for me, I am not willing to accept him, and character does matter.
Bill Clinton set the "bar" or standards for character, and Barack Obama carries on the tradition, with relationships and friends like William Ayers, Tony Rezko, and others.
When the "waffling" begins, don't blame me.
