Young Okla. man walks across country for love

GREENUP — After telling his would-be girlfriend how he feels about her, 24-year-old Dustin Ballew decided to walk the talk.

He passed through the area Monday, barely a month after departing from Washington, D.C., on his quest to walk almost coast to coast and win the favor of Sarah, his “best friend” from his hometown of Durant, Okla.

“I think she’s kind of having a cow about it,” Ballew said.

With the laminated sign “I LOVE SARAH” plastered across his backpack, Ballew, a one-time English major at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, is chronicling his experience in a journal that he intends to present to Sarah. (Ballew declined to give her last name. He said Sarah is only a junior in high school.)

As for the sign on his back, “Everybody thinks it’s (referring to) Sarah Palin,” Ballew said with a laugh. “I have to correct them. I guess that’s what I get for waiting until the election.”

He is traveling along U.S. Route 40 on his way to St. Louis, where he will turn southwest and return home for a while before resuming his odyssey in early 2009. He hopes eventually to reach San Diego, Calif., on foot.

By routing the second half of his journey through the Southwest, Ballew thinks he will avoid the worst of the Rocky Mountains in the middle of winter.

He said he took a bus to Washington, and set off on his journey Sept. 25. He followed the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal to Cumberland, Md., and then picked up Route 40.

During an interview along the historic highway west of Greenup on Monday, Ballew estimated he had logged more than 750 miles. “This is really my first time away from home,” he said.

“When I started, I was kind of scared I’d run into some trouble, but I haven’t had any problems. People are always nice to me. It continually amazes me.”

In addition to a sturdy tent, sleeping bag and lightweight trail shoes, Ballew is equipped with a smart phone he uses to communicate with his family and friends. He said he calls his mother in Oklahoma every night; if he is late even by 10 minutes, he receives a panicky text message.

Although he frequently mails postcards to Sarah, he has not talked to her by phone since he departed.

Ballew is carrying his gear in a military-type backpack, which bears more than 20 autographs from well-wishers encountered thus far on his adventure.

He said he has needed to stay in a hotel only once; otherwise, he camps out in his tent near churches or in sheltered areas out of sight from the roadway.

Ballew said he eats fast- food about once per day, and stocks up on snacks at convenience stores. He is trying to keep his costs under $10 per day, and carries less than $50 in cash, relying instead on a debit card.

To pay for the trip, he sold many of his possessions — including two acoustic guitars he acquired last spring. An avid musician, he said he also plays the drums.

Ballew said he met Sarah about two years ago, and they quickly became “best friends.” However, they had a bit of a falling out in February. “She stayed mad at me for a while, and I wanted to (do something) so she knows what I think of her,” he said.

Walking is nothing new to him, as he never learned how to drive a car. Ballew went to and from classes at SOSU on foot nearly every day, and came up with the idea of traipsing across the United States during an eight-hour, round-trip hike to the cemetery where his grandparents are buried.

“I thought, ‘Would I walk that far for Sarah?’” Ballew said. If not, “How could I mean any of the things I said to her?”

" He's 24 and she's "only a junior in high school"? This scenario is more than a little disturbing. Why oh why oh why did you think it appropriate to run an article on this guy? It sounds to me as if he's in need in some serious help. And by including the young woman's first name and hometown, you have violated her privacy as well. Bad move, newspaper. "

She is underage, he is 24!!!
He met her two years ago and became 'best friends'??? 14 and 22!!!!
And the JG-TC decided this is an ok article to print????
Printing this is just so wrong in many ways.
When my son was leaving for Brazil for his junior year, with Rotary exchange, I tried to get an article printed and was totally ignored by JG-TC.
I just don't understand!!!!!! "

and no, i'm not a "man"-i'm an awkward and shy boy earnestly trying to keep a promise he made. the only "man" i've ever met was my grandfather; they seem in short supply these days.

--go ahead and continue talking about my "issues" and how shifty and creepy and utterly DEBASED i must be if you'd like. FYI, my dog smells as well. i'm just trying to live as honestly as i can and communicate something that i feel because that is what is most important to me. and that's hardly newsworthy.

go talk about your next president or do something nice for your community or someone you love; those are worthwhile activities. dissecting the character of an unknown that lives 700 miles away is not. Christ.

nathaniel: again, thank you for coming out and talking with me. this is the first press i have received; but it will also be the last that i consent to. it just feels unnecessary i guess. let the lemmings find someone else to pick apart.

and if you happen upon this and you've helped me at any point along the way, i can't thank you enough.

Hey harry I suppose you also find it unacceptable for a 48 year old married to a 32 year old. Just think Harry, when I was a Senior in High School my wife was only 2, CREEPY, Huh.

It's sad that nowadays a Senior in High School can actually be charged for a crime if he is dating a sophomore or freshman.

Maybe Obama will come up with a new law that prohibits anyone from dating if there is a 2 year age difference. "

" First, I must agree with the other posts. I am very surprised that the JG included their ages. If they wanted to do a story, it should have focused only on his cross-country walk--not that it's really newsworthy (or front page), but it could be a nice feature story. Here, I rewrote your headline for you: "Okla. man passes through Greenup on [fill in the blank]-mile walk".

Dustin, if you read these posts again, I hope that you take this to heart. Besides the fact that it is illegal for an adult (which you are) to have a relationship with a child (which she is), you cannot possibly have anything in common with a high school student. You are in two completely different places in your lives, and you need to realize that before you get yourself into trouble. "

It sounds like he has developed some independence, responsibility, motivation, etc . . . That's pretty good for a 24 year old male. Most 24 year old males I know are college dropouts, ex-cons, or worse!!! Give him a break! And, it's not illegal to date a 17 year old! "

" We had two other options for this story: Cut it completely, or run it without listing anyone's age. After several good discussions with my editors, we elected to include the ages of Dustin and Sarah, and go with the story. It's tough to argue that a 24-year-old walking thousands of miles to prove himself to a girl is not newsworthy. If we opted to omit Dustin and Sarah's ages, certainly readers would have found their MySpace pages and then learned their ages. "

Trips/adventures like this can be seen as "rights of passage", not to dissimilar to "vision quests" of some American Indians, or Shirley McClains walking the Camino. By the time this trip is over this young man will have changed in many ways, grown up (his mental emotional age may better match his physical age), and his girl friend will still be --well who knows if her growth will match his. What kind of parent could/would condone a boy - or man, as I (and many of you) would call him, of 24-years, walking across the country to profess his love to their daughter ... ?
Seriously, on the day before a national and local election, this was NOT newsworthy. How about a story highlighting the contested races that were on the ballot in Coles County (coroner, states attorney)? Or a local story weighing in on thoughts about the possibility of electing the nation's first African-American president or first female vice-president? "
