LETTER: Media bias shows favor for Obama campaign

I can no longer restrain from speaking out about the media bias in this election, including newspapers and mainstream television.

The Decatur Herald Sunday paper a few weeks ago had six negative articles about the McCain/Palin campaign and two glowing admirable articles about Obama. Nothing negative for Obama.

The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was a “Picture to Nowhere” in the (Oct. 10) paper on page three. This large picture of Obama boarding an airplane titled at top of picture said, “He’s got a plane to catch.” Who cares anyway? This picture was not connected to any articles as far as I could see on this page.

His name was mentioned in a nearby article that had nothing whatsoever connected to Obama boarding a plane. I suppose the paper thought they should get at least one picture in the paper that particular day.

The Times-Courier has had negative articles about the McCain/Palin campaign also. More than negative Obama articles.

We have a governor associated with the radical Chicago Democrat Machine. How’s that working for us?

I am 75 years old and have been voting since I was 21 years old and have never seen anything like this.

I can’t for the life of me understand why any American would want a president having numerous associations with many Chicago radicals. We all know who they are if we watch television at all. Then again maybe you don’t if all you watch is ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.

If you want to know the truth, fair and balanced, watch Fox News Channel. All their prime time news programs have people from both parties asked the same questions. You will see how many Democrats question Obama’s associations also.

I challenge everyone to be alert to what’s going on and disregard the smooth talking rhetoric from Obama. And be concerned for America’s future. Obama’s spokespersons say Americans are not concerned about the Chicago radicals. We can prove them wrong when we go to the voter’s booth on Nov. 4. I know all of this is in God’s hands. He has a purpose no matter which way this election goes.

We should pray for God to bless America. I know I will be praying.

BERNICE ATHEY

Casey

Make no mistake about it. The best example of bias in the media is Fox News. Take a trip around your radio dial this afternoon and see how many radio stations are broadcasting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hanity, and Bill Oriely.
Seems to me like you have brain wash confused with bias in the media. And for the record I believe in God and I am a Democrat. It's time the Republicans stopped claiming God as their own! "

" Aren't the negative campaign tactics of McCain important news to report? If one person does something negative and the other doesn't, what is the news media to do, invent something negative about the one in order to have fair and balanced reporting. Or does this writer only want the "good" reports of McCain reported? Would she be satisfied if only "good" news was reported about both candidates? "

Fox News has stated, multiple times, that many of their prime time shows O'Reilly and Hannity are not news programs at all -- which I am sure is news to you. They are editorials, and there is, admitted by Fox News, a bias in their editorial programming.

Did you know CNN was the first to break the William Ayers story? You are incorrect, as the media did inform the country of these so-called connections of Obama. Problem is, the country doesn't care about it. The rest of the country doesn't buy the "palling around with terrorists line." Fox News did hammer that, oddly enough, in conjunction with the McCain camp -- now McCain is saying socialist, so now that is what Fox News is hammering on.

Sadly, you think Fox News is fair and balanced and the only news that is pro-American/pro-GOP.

People aren't buying it this time around, sorry. "

Obama announced in feb 07. The primaries were filled with no stone unturned coverage, and none of it panned out. If there was something, it likely would have been verified back in the primaries. If something new seeped to the surface, it would hit the wires like a fire storm.

McCain got his nomination in March. Between then and His Palin surprise, he took a sebatical as far as campaigning goes. He gets coverage when he campaigns, and it tends to be negative. His campaign is negative. He wasted the first two months after the convention, just trying to convince people how bad Obama was, and offered absolutely no substance of his own, in the process. He now has more plans on issues, but it's kinda late and still pretty vague and sparse.

Many opinionated people, don't care what the truth is, unless it coincides with their opinions. Anything that contradicts their beliefs, is biased and shows favoratism.

No one can offer substance for why McCain/Palin is a good choice. They only demand that Obama isn't. If he is your choice, and there is substance to his campaign on anything, share it without mentioning Obama. If the GOP ticket stands for things, besides the obvious, make a valid case that can be verified. "

" Media Matters: Fox News Three Strikes, Youre Out!

Media Matters nails Fox News three times yesterday for false assertations. Do they honestly believe no one is listening or checking the facts? In this age of YouTube, Media Matters and FactCheck.org nothing usually slips by without someone catching you lying on tevee or the radio.

Gretchen Carlson was the first one they caught, no surprise there. The Fox and Friends Show is always making ludicrous claims that they try to pass off as facts - in there so called Fair & Balanced reporting.

Fox News Gretchen Carlson falsely claimed that roughly 40 percent of Sen. Barack Obamas plan to cut taxes is a handout to people who do not pay taxes. In fact, all American workers are required to pay taxes on their wages for Social Security and Medicare, and according to an Obama economic adviser, every person that receives a tax cut under Barack Obamas plan is working.

Next up Brit Hume, the GOP cheerleader, and Gretchen yet again - repeated a report of Sarkozy comments about Obama, without noting French Embassy dismissed report as groundless.

Special Report host Brit Hume, Fox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson, and New York Post writer Geoff Earle uncritically repeated a report by Israeli newspaper Haaretz that French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Sen. Barack Obamas position on Iran utterly immature and formulations empty of all content without noting that the French Embassy issued a statement calling the Haaretz report about Sarkozys comments groundless.

Lastly, Shepard Smith who was disturbed the other day by Joe the Plumbers statement about Obama - yesterday, affirmed Palins misleading claim that Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes.

After airing video of Gov. Sarah Palins misleading assertion that Sen. Barack Obama voted 94 times for higher taxes, Fox News Shepard Smith affirmed Palins claim, saying, Well, theyll [Democrats] argue with that, but I guess down to its core, thats true. However, Smith offered no support for his purported confirmation of Palins assertion, and FactCheck.org has described the claim as inflated and padded.

Reviewing each of Obamas 94 votes, FactCheck.org found:

Twenty-three were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all; they were against proposed tax cuts.

Seven of the votes were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals.

Eleven votes the GOP is counting would have increased taxes on those making more than $1 million a year in order to fund programs such as Head Start and school nutrition programs, or veterans health care.

The GOP sometimes counted two, three and even four votes on the same measure. We found their tally included a total of 17 votes on seven measures, effectively padding their total by 10.

The majority of the 94 votes 53 of them, including some mentioned above were on budget measures, not tax bills, and would not have resulted in any tax change. Four other votes were non-binding motions related to conference report negotiations.

Fox News is the most biased in the business, with a conservative tilt. No wonder John McCain and Sarah Palin do interviews with them; they dont need to worry about being challenged on any false assertations they make. Its like playing baseball and having the umpire on your side, you cant lose. "

Sen. Obama, Is America Worthy of Being Led by Somebody So Awesome?
Leisa Zigman, a reporter for KSDK-TV, got a chance for a five-minute interview with a man who may be the next president of the United States. The station was so proud of her hard-hitting questions that it posted them online (you need to watch the accompanying video to hear his answers). Here they are (quoting verbatim):

1.) Your presidential campaign may go down as the most organized in history. Yet the polls remain tight in Missouri. In the last seven days what else can you say to sway undecided and McCain leaning Missouri voters?

2.) Today, Bob Clark-founder of Clayco Construction sent a letter to his employees. In part it read, "Sometimes, but rarely, a person appears at the right time and the right place to transform ordinary people into thinkers and doers who can accomplish more than they ever thought they could. That truly is the definition of inspiration. Barack Obama has this quality. I have witnessed it personally many times."

In 2004 Mr. Clark raised thousands for the Bush campaign. But for the past two years, he's raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for your campaign. Please respond?

3.) Who has helped your campaign more; Missouri U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill or Oprah?

4.) What was it like when you were in St. Louis in front 100,000 people? What were you thinking as you looked out from the Arch to the Old Court House and beyond?

5.) Many people are worried about your safety. What are your thoughts in light of the alleged skin head plot?

Newsweek's Howard Fineman observes:

Much of the media coverage of Obama has been fawning to say the least, and with good reason. He is one of the most winsome, charismatic candidates to have appeared on the scene in decades.

That's just how they taught it in journalism school. A reporter's job is to comfort the winsome and afflict the uncharismatic."

Winning the Media Campaign
October 22, 2008
How the Press Reported the 2008 General Election

The media coverage of the race for president has not so much cast Barack Obama in a favorable light as it has portrayed John McCain in a substantially negative one, according to a new study of the media since the two national political conventions ended.

Press treatment of Obama has been somewhat more positive than negative, but not markedly so.

But coverage of McCain has been heavily unfavorableand has become more so over time. In the six weeks following the conventions through the final debate, unfavorable stories about McCain outweighed favorable ones by a factor of more than three to onethe most unfavorable of all four candidatesaccording to the study by the Pew Research Centers Project for Excellence in Journalism.

For Obama during this period, just over a third of the stories were clearly positive in tone (36%), while a similar number (35%) were neutral or mixed. A smaller number (29%) were negative.

For McCain, by comparison, nearly six in ten of the stories studied were decidedly negative in nature (57%), while fewer than two in ten (14%) were positive. "

* MSNBC stood out for having less negative coverage of Obama than the press generally (14% of stories vs. 29% in the press overall) and for having more negative stories about McCain (73% of its coverage vs. 57% in the press overall).

* On Fox News, in contrast, coverage of Obama was more negative than the norm (40% of stories vs. 29% overall) and less positive (25% of stories vs. 36% generally). For McCain, the news channel was somewhat more positive (22% vs. 14% in the press overall) and substantially less negative (40% vs. 57% in the press overall). Yet even here, his negative stories outweighed positive ones by almost 2 to 1.

* CNN fell distinctly in the middle of the three cable channels when it came to tone. In general, the tone of its coverage was closer than any other cable news channel to the press overall, though also somewhat more negative than the media overall.

* The distinct tone of MSNBCmore positive toward Democrats and more negative toward Republicanswas not reflected in the coverage of its broadcast sibling, NBC News. Even though it has correspondents appear on their cable shows and even anchor some programs on there, the broadcast channel showed no such ideological tilt. Indeed, NBCs coverage of Palin was the most positive of any TV organization studied, including Fox News.

* At night, the newscasts of the three traditional broadcast networks stood out for being more neutraland also less negativethan most other news outlets. The morning shows of the networks, by contrast, more closely resembled the media generally in tone. That might surprise some who imagined those morning programs were somehow easier on political figures. Overall, 44% of the morning show stories were clearly negative, compared with 34% on the nightly news and 42% in the press overall.

" it's easy to write negative columns when a candidate depends on lies and innuendo as his main campaign messages.

what positive could you write about a lie and a liar?

simple as that. "

Does anybody have any idea why some letters seem to hang on forever and others seem to disappear? This particular one can only be found by doing a search. Or at least that's the only way I can find it. "

" You're Welcome, Gang.

Alot of times, as you've probably already noticed, if not a whole lot is happening in the "Most Commented" area, that's because some folks are back here, in the Archive wastelands, going to town still.
LOL

Also, beware that sometimes the JG-TC Webmaster changes the web address/URL, to some of the articles, when they're sent off into the Archives, & it may necessitate having to hunt for some of them, again, the old fashion way, so you can update what you have in your Bookmarks/Favorites column.

It gets aggravating sometimes, but whatever toots their flutes.
LOL!

Have a good one, friends!
:-) "

LOL

C Yaz!
:-) "
