LETTER: Staff conveyed caring attitude to deceased

I am a funeral director in Decatur and have been in the business for 20-plus years. One of my duties is to pick up the remains of deceased people from hospitals, Nursing homes or Private homes.

I have encountered many professional people in the health care industry, and unfortunately some that are not so professional. The point of this letter is to commend the Mattoon Health Care Center in Coles County.

I arrived at the nursing home at nearly 10 p.m. on Sunday October 12, to pick up a family’s deceased loved one. I was met at the door by a staff member, escorted to the room and assisted by two members of staff in moving the person from the bed.

Upon leaving the room the entire staff (approximately 15 people) stood at attention in the hallway as we passed by. Three members of staff helped in my exit of the building, entering alarm codes and holding doors open as I pushed my mortuary cot out to the waiting car. The entire staff once again followed out; stood at attention giving their respect to someone they had all served.

This person wasn’t the mayor or a big business Owner or anyone that a lot of people would consider overly important, but to this group of care givers this person was important and received a royal send off.

The Mattoon Health Care Center is to be commended for their caring, compassionate and loving attitude towards their fellow man.

" Thank you for your wonderful letter about Mattoon Health Care. This is called a "Code Love" and is a wonderful tribute to the life of the deceased resident. As a former employee of that facility, I have to say I was never able to participate in a Code Love without crying. It is a beautiful sentiment. I'm glad to hear you were able to experience it! This is a great facility and the staff truly does care about their residents. "

" And while everyone was at attention, was ANYONE watching the other patients? "

" Why is it that someone rights a very nice letter commending the work and respect of ppl and medic57 you have to go and blow it w/a dumb comment about who was watching the other patients. It was 10 at night...ppl sleep. I also think to take 15-30 min or whatever to pay some respect is worth it. Medic57 grow up, have some commpassion and respect for the deceased and for those who work hard to help ease the pain on the family. I would imagine that many of the ppl have been at the Health Center for awhile. Any employee w/a heart probably forms a relationship w/these ppl and I bet it can be just as hard on them as it is the family. "

" And of all those people that were sleeping, there was not one with a medical condition that required constant monitoring? "

" medic57, I think people with a medical condition that required constant monitoring qualify for something other than a nursing home. Usually they are in a hospital. My brother worked in an area of the hospital for this, and it was called...hmm, let me think... oh yeah: MONITORED CARE.

(Even there the nurses don't stand over a patient every second; that patients are monitored by machines that alert them.)

I guess it's easy to make a comment about every single thing that gets posted on this website when you don't have to stop and think before posting. "
