Jaycees costume contest winner dives deep into character

CHARLESTON — The annual Charleston Jaycees Halloween parade and contest went swimmingly for 7-year-old Dayton Black on Saturday.

Dayton won the overall prize with his homemade scuba diver costume during an event that was attended by approximately 30 colorfully costumed participants.

The young scuba diver was dressed head to toe in a black outfit over which he wore flippers, goggles and a snorkel. The costume also included simulated air tanks and weights that Dayton’s father, Bob Black, made by spray painting plastic bottles silver.

“My husband always makes his costumes,” Rhonda Black explained.

Dayton said he picked his costume because he likes scuba divers and sharks. The costume’s fishing net was filled with small plastic sharks on Saturday.

“Probably when I grow up I am going to be a scuba diver,” Dayton said.

His flippers slapped against the road as the costumed participants marched around the courthouse square.

The colorful crowd also included an old woman and man portrayed by 12-year-old Preston Storment and his mother, Kelly Roberts, respectively. This odd couple won first place in the group category.

“He was going to be an old lady. We decided at the last minute I would dress up as an old man and go with him. We have had fun,” Roberts said, sporting stubble made from coffee grounds and petroleum jelly.

Preston’s costume included curlers, glasses, a flowered dress, heeled shoes and a purse. Preston said he picked his costume for laughs, but added walking in a dress was pretty uncomfortable.

“Being an old lady is cold!” Preston later exclaimed as a chilly wind blew across the square.

The list of prize winners in the various categories at the costume contest includes:
