Charleston cleanup day to be held Saturday
By ROB STROUD, Staff Writer rstroud@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON — Residents can get rid of old furniture, appliances and other items cluttering their homes during the city’s fall cleanup Saturday.
The cleanup is scheduled for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at Ne-Co Fields on North E Street and the city street garage under the Adkins Drive water tower. Recyclable metals will be accepted at the Adkins Drive location only.
Refuse bins will be provided at no cost at both locations. City staff will help unload refuse items. Only Charleston residents or owners of rental property can participate in the cleanup.
“We get a lot of couches, chairs and mattresses, and just general household items. A lot of it comes from people cleaning out rental properties,” Combs said.
Combs said the fall cleanup is usually not as busy as the spring one. He said there is a rush first thing in the morning, but traffic usually slows down by 10 a.m. He said participants can usually drop off their refuse within five to 10 minutes.
Items that are not accepted at the cleanup locations include building materials exceeding 1 cubic yard, auto parts, tires, paint and other liquids, batteries, burnt materials, florescent light tubes, electronics, leaves and other yard waste, and rocks and other landscape waste.
Combs said the city accepts washers, dryers, water heaters and some other appliances at the Adkins Drive location for disposal at General Steel & Metals in Mattoon.
Appliances containing freon, such as air conditioners and refrigerators, should be taken to Grose Appliance, Combs said. Grose Appliance, 2310 W. State St. in Charleston, accepts these and other appliances throughout the year.
The Coles County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Lincoln Heritage Resource Conservation & Development Council plan to hold an electronic recycling day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 777 Windsor Drive in the Northwest Business Park along Illinois Route 316.
Computer equipment, copiers, faxes, phones, batteries, entertainment systems, radios, cameras, and other related items will be accepted. There is a charge for computer monitors and televisions. This site does not accept refrigerators, washers, dryers or other large appliances.
“I think (the electronics recycling) is a great thing because much of that stuff we would just have to throw in a landfill. This way it gets recycled,” Combs said
Combs said city staff will be at the leaf and limb drop-off site Saturday to help unload residents’ yard waste and load mulch for them. The site is located on West Madison Avenue near the wastewater treatment plant and is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week, excluding holidays, this fall.
