LETTER: It's up to the voters to repair nation's problems

It seems that every election cycle, politicians and pollsters ask some variant of this question: Do you think the country is headed in the right direction? To any thinking person the answer has to be an emphatic NO!

If you’re under 50 years old, you can’t remember (as I can) when our country was a much different and better place; when our streets, homes and schools were safe; when most children had both a father and a mother; when most families ate, played and prayed together — and could be found in church on Sunday; when unborn babies were safe in their mother’s wombs; when our brave patriotic service men and women were universally supported and respected; when prison construction was not a growth industry; and when our public schools were second to none.

Do you think this describes America today? If not, then who is to blame? What can we do to restore our nation to greatness?

For me the answer is clear: we get the kind of government and society we deserve. We the electorate are to blame-and we must repair the damage.

While we as a nation are in a fight for our survival; threatened by not only radical Islam but our unwitting drift into socialism, there are those who either don’t vote at all or fall prey to the machinations of artful politicians who promise “cradle to grave care” in return for the sacrifice of your freedom.

In a few days we will be asked to choose our leaders. Several of the players are known quantities; one — conspicuously — is not. Dick Durbin, no patriot in my view, has spent his entire adult life in the Senate warring against America’s traditional values. Joe Biden (in my opinion) is a relatively harmless ignoramus. But Barack Obama poses another kind of concern: just who is this guy anyway?

What accounts for his meteoric rise from his questionable activities in Chicago to contending for the leadership of the free world with virtually no record of achievement in the Illinois Legislature or in his several years as a senator in Washington - during which time he has spent most of his time running for his parties nomination for President?

Before you vote you might want to look into these matters very carefully!

I already have; for me it’s a no brainer — I’m voting for McCain, Palin and Saurberg for the Senate.

DAVID W. MILLER

Sullivan

Good letter Mr. Miller. "

" I guess I can say that I agree with this article somewhere around 95 per cent. We could all do with a little more patriotism, a little more worship, and a little more respect for ourselves and others.

But I am old enough to remember the times of which you speak. The passage of time has made them appear ideal. The actual fact is that they weren't.

Babies weren't safe in the womb even then. They never have been. Plus there were no good methods of birth control except for abstinance (still highly desirable.) Now I abhor the idea of abortion, but I am a realist. Women have been seeking them for millenia and aren't going to stop just because I hate them. And there is no way I want to see us go back to the ways of the past when abortions came in what can only be adequately described as butcher shops. What we need is better birth control widely available to all with emphasis on abstinance. And better education on respectful behavior.

In the time of which you speak, women were forced into menial, low paying jobs by a culture which did not believe that they had anything more to contribute to society than their wombs. Minority races fared even worse. They could even be murdered without the guilty being punished. Men could beat their families with virtually no interference, and those family members had no resources available to escape. Many of the criminals sent to prison today would not have even been arrested then. There were no laws written emphasizing the illegality of their behaviors.

I remember a time when my mother went to the bank to withdraw a sum of money from a saving's account that belonged to both her and my father. It wasn't even a large amount. If memory serves she intended to buy school shoes for her children. Before releasing the money, the bank called my father for his permission to allow her to do that. They never called to get her permission when he made withdrawals.

I can get as nostalgic over my youth just the same as anyone else. In my child's memory those times may even seem perfect. But the adult me knows the truth. We have made fine advances in many areas that I would not give up for anything. There have been things lost that maybe should not have been. Let us not wish to regress, but let us maintain what is better, and re-establish what is gone.

At each and every election we have the chance to improve our country. It doesn't matter which candidate has the best smile or the most teeth. It matters which one is the most likely to have a positive impact for today and the future. It saddens me to watch while political campaigns have degenerated from trying to exemplify how good one is, to trying to show how twisted and bad the other guy is. I hate the twisted facts and name calling. I feel no respect for any of them. But I will make a choice.

I pray to God for guidance that my feeble human eyes manage to see through the hype in order to make the best choice possible from the pittance we have been offered. The worst thing that I could do, is to not vote at all. "

Nobody's claiming, to my knowledge, that you are not taking a risk by voting for Barack Obama. But you are also taking a risk by voting for McCain. Here's a man full of hate from past abuses as a POW. It's been reported that if you were abused in your early lives, you will tend to abuse others. It's a known fact - McCain's temper has been reported on many times.

Any vote you make for a President, Senator or any other office you are taking a risk that they way do what they say they will do. I don't care how many years they've had of experience. It doesn't matter what they've done before -during that experience either -- it doesn't matter.

Once they WIN that position -- every politician changes or flips on what they will do. None of them carries out their promises thru 100%, not even 80%.

If they succeed in getting 40% of what they promise done - they are considered a success in my view.

If you believe in the Iraq war, if you believe Bush did an Ok or better job the past 8 years -- you will vote for McCain. If not, you will vote for someone else - hopefully Barack Obama.

Did you agree with McCain's immigration plan for amnesty? Did you agree with his vote AGAINST Bush's tax cut the first time around? Did you agree with his reversal on those tax cuts?

If not - perhaps you should look at somebody else as your Pres.

Voting is so Simple (NOT). "

I think this USA is at the verge of a cosmic shift. The History of the Human Race is a history of gradual change until a tipping point is reached that culminates in a violent upheaval that leads to a short (very short) period of homeostasis that leads to a gradual transition until a tipping point is reached that leads to a violent upheaval. The old order becomes more beligerant and repressive as its numbers and influence dwindle as the new order gains in numbers, strength, power, influence and control.

I think the US is at the tipping point. Obama represents the new world order and McCain the old world order. The question is whether we have advanced enough that this upheaval will be a peaceful one rather than a violent one. That this upheaval is inevitable is not in question.

What are the differences between this new world order and the old world order? Ill let you ponder that question on your own. "

" The biggest question that the writer has asked is why has Obama risen to fame so quickly with no record of achievement? Well, I think, first of all, being a Senator is an achievement. It is an important job, and you can look up his track record any time you want. This is a person we are supposed to be able to go to with our problems. Second, many people in Chicago probably know him better than we do, as he has done much charity work and been more publicized up there, so they probably heard of him long before we did. Third, in a day and age like now, when just about everything we have is in a crisis, we need someone different, because obviously, the current path is not working. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and people who may have not thought they could be president are now stepping up, as they feel it is their duty to try to change things. There is nothing wrong with this. Fourth, we had never heard of Palin before McCain picked her, and if he hadn't, we still wouldn't know who she was, unless we visited Alaska. So to say these things about Obama is sticking your foot in your mouth. "

Thanks for the laugh, PAG. The idea of anyone like you or the loony ed miller putting anyone in a corner is rather funny. There have been some pretty good debaters from the right side on here, but neither of you fall into that category. Sorry. About the best you two can come up with is repeating trite talking points.

Here's something to think about, perhaps I didn't answer eddies lame question, because I assumed that he was a RNC/Fox news fan and was aware of what has been said about Obama, and I'm sure, like you he is probably a Rush Limbaugh fan, and he is surely not stupid enough to not be able to see through all of that hot air and prevarications told by that idiot daily. Maybe not.

If you're not aware of all the out and out lies being told on a daily basis, then what purpose would it serve for me to list them? O:K, well I guess we could start with the lies being perpetuated about Obama, such as the Muslim stories, perhaps the pledge fib and on and on.... You do know how to search the various sites on the Web, don't you. Have at it.

Oh, and don't forget sites from people like the nutty Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Charles Krauthammer....well you get the idea. The last time I checked they were all of the Republican party.

I almost forgot the biggest lie out there, and that is that the hirsute Palin is ready to step in as president. That one even has a lot of conservatives upset. "

Well you should probably stop posting with your eyes closed then. It happens everyday, and he replies with personal insults and talk about Palin's "hairy lip." He has nothing relevant to say. I can probably summarize his points actually...

If it's against Obama is propaganda.

If it's against the Democratic party it's propaganda.

If you back him into a corner you're either "not too bright" or "hairy."

If you ask him about Obama and ACORN for a week he'll ignore you until he THINKS he has something on McCain and ACORN. THEN he's ready to talk!

If you refer him to a post about McCain's wishes to buy up bad mortgages instead of Obama's idea of giving $700 billion to CEO's who throw $440+k spa parties in celebration of government buyouts he ignores you... oh, and calls you "not too bright."

As for the the "real, respectful sense..." Oh my, you REALLY ARE posting with your eyes closed! "

To really understand the mindset of people like PAG and ed miller, you have to spend some time watching Fox news or listen to the Republican radio kooks like Limbaugh and Hannity, nj.

Fox news and the radio nut jobs fulfill a purpose, and that is they do the thinking for people like our two friends. Some people right wingers are intellectually lazy, and need to have someone tell them what to think. Not to disparage those living in trailers, I call those folks trailer park Republicans.

Positions taken by the radical right wing media usually show up here the same day, in some form of regurgitation, by the likes of ed miller and PAG.

Limbaugh fans have been hearing him claim the Dems are imploding for years now, and are buying it, but here we are on the verge of the Dems possibly taking the White House and increasing their majorities in both houses. And yet the Limbaugh fans continue to eat up all of his stupid rantings. Not many right wingers are willing to admit it on here, in fact many of them, like Tom Andres, vehemently deny listening to him, but when I see what is being said by that fat drug addicted drag queen, being posted on here, I know they are eating up his propaganda.

Hate speech being spewed by the folks at FOX folks seem to have no effect on them. Have you heard any of them condemn the hatred being yelled out toward Obama at the Palin rallies? Not a word of condemnation from Palin, at least McCain asked them to stop it. It's obvious that he has no control over the out of her league simpleton Palin.

PAG gets bent out of shape by my hairy lip references about Palin, which is true by the way, but would no doubt give Limbaugh a pass for his daily messiah comments regarding Obama. I'm still wondering why that particular comment got the reaction it did from PAG, it must have hit close to home I guess. Hmmmm.....Is it possible that PAG suffers from the Palin hairy lip malady? How about it Paggy?

It's fine with me if our friends think they have put me in a corner, both of them are thick enough to actually see it that way. Actually, I get a kick out of causing those two to go into their childish little hissy fits, and make total fools of themselves, like they did last night.

You know, Limbaugh, O'Reily, Hannity are all commentators not reporters. The same for Olbermen and Bill Mahr. If FOX is slanted to the right, what about all of the other networks? You never mention them. Here's a few tidbits from mrc.org.

* In 1992, nine of the White House correspondents surveyed voted for Democrat Bill Clinton, two for Republican George H. W. Bush, and one for independent Ross Perot.

* In 1988, 12 voted for Democrat Michael Dukakis, one for Bush.

* In 1984, 10 voted for Democrat Walter Mondale, zero for Ronald Reagan.

* In 1980, eight voted for Democrat Jimmy Carter, four for liberal independent John Anderson, and two voted for Ronald Reagan.

* When asked how they voted in the 1984 election, more than twice as many newspaper journalists chose liberal Walter Mondale (58 percent) over the conservative incumbent Ronald Reagan (26 percent), even as the country picked Reagan in a 59 to 41 percent landslide.

* More than three out of four elite journalists, 76 percent, reported voting for Michael Dukakis in 1988, compared to just 46 percent of the voting public.

* An even larger percentage of top journalists, 91 percent, cast ballots for Bill Clinton in 1992. That same year, only 43 percent of voters picked Clinton, who nevertheless won a three-way race.

* 89 percent of Washington-based reporters said they voted for Bill Clinton in 1992. Only seven percent voted for George Bush, with two percent choosing Ross Perot.

* Asked How would you characterize your political orientation? 61 percent said liberal or liberal to moderate. Only nine percent labeled themselves conservative or moderate to conservative.

Tierney found a strong preference for the liberal Kerry: When asked who would be a better president, the journalists from outside the Beltway picked Mr. Kerry 3 to 1, and the ones from Washington favored him 12 to 1. Those results jibe with previous surveys over the past two decades showing that journalists tend to be Democrats, especially the ones based in Washington.

One out of eight journalists (13%) said they considered themselves strongly liberal, compared to just three percent who reported being strongly conservative, a four-to-one disparity.

So you see Potter, with the vast majority of news media slanting to the left, if one outlet reports fairly, it will seem biased to the right. "

" Fox News is not merely "biased." Fox NEWS LIES AS A MATTER OF POLICY.
For Fox News, as for its Republican masters, the truth is something to be kept in secret for the rulers to use, like energy policy task forces, lists of U.S. attorneys to be fired for political purposes, programs for spying on American citizens and the real intelligence about Iraq.
The rest of us are to be fed whatever lies we will swallow without gagging.
Faking reality is the worst thing a journalist can do, and yet Fox News does it routinely: altering photos to make its targets look hideous, changing a scandal-plagued Republican's party affiliation, claiming Lincoln debated Frederick Douglass, falsely blaming U.S. troops for atrocities at Malmedy, and citing statistics from a nonexistent magazine, the "Paris Business Review."
The Republicans in Congress knew about GOP Rep. Mark Foley's boy-chasing proclivities for years, and did nothing whatsoever about it. When it all came out, they blamed the Democrats and got Fox News to change Foley's party affiliation for them.
On Fox News, Meme Roth pointed out what a good thing high gas prices are, because they will mean that working class families will no longer be able to afford cable TV and Internet, and so the children in those families will be forced to go outside and play instead. Cheer up, America! High gas prices fight obesity!
On Fox News, Liz Trotta laughed with approval as she suggested that Barack Obama should be assassinated.
Fox News now treats John McCain as a sainted, fearless leader. But it wasn't that long ago that they were busy trying to destroy him so that one of their preferred Republican candidates could win the GOP nomination. Heres Neil Cavuto of Fox News on Feb. 6, 2008: I'm also hearing a lot of people are waiting for Senator McCain to snap; for him to do something crazy and that just as he's on the verge of winning this, he's gonna go, you know, kinda like a Norman Bates deal.
By the way, during the Iraq invasion, I distinctly remember Fox News breathlessly announcing that the WMD had been found at least a dozen times. What ever happened to all those WMD, anyway?
Liberal efforts to support union wages and public education created the American middle class, and the plutocrats who control Fox News really can't stand that uppity bunch. Employees are so much easier to control when they are kept at subsistence-level poverty wages without education. Therefore, public education is also a constant target for Fox News.
It's not the quality of public schools that really bothers Fox. It's the fact that they exist.
Determined to leech off the hard-won credibility of legitimate news organizations, Fox News adopted the slogans fair and balanced, and We report. You decide both laughably false in their case.
A more appropriate motto for Fox News would be Comfort the comfortable, and afflict the afflicted.
This assault on real journalism in this country is part of a larger Republican fascist assault on fact and reason itself, with Rapture loony toons ranting away while the White House forces government scientists to lie and Fox News reporting that Abraham Lincoln debated a black abolitionist instead of Stephen A. Douglas. When you're a fascist propaganda organization posing as a news organization, you naturally have contempt for news values such as accuracy.
The job of Fox News is, at minimum, to reduce everything to opinion, to eliminate fact. If you can eliminate fact and reason, history and science, you can get the masses to swallow whatever monstrous, murderous lie you'd care to sell them.
All the real reporting in this country is done by newspapers. As they die off in our increasingly dumbed-down society, what will be left is reporting" like that found on Fox News: cheap, vapid celebrity gossip and lying propaganda. And you'd be well advised to pray to your God to help the nation we'll have left then. "

" I wrote this, too:
The "liberal bias" of the news media is a useful lie for you right wingers, and some of you are actually stupid enough to believe it. The puppet corporate media dutifully swallowed every Bush lie to drag us into Iraq.
Here's a capsule history of the "liberal media" for you.
Far from being graceful winners, the Bush administrations first act in office was to plant a fake news story to discredit their defeated Democratic opponents. Bush staffers claimed that the outgoing Clinton staff had trashed the White House, cutting phones lines and removing the Ws from computer keyboards.
A formal review by the General Accounting Office, Congress investigative agency, later found no damage to the White House offices and no record of damage deliberately caused by the Clinton staff. But the Bush dirty tricksters had already gotten the lying headlines they wanted.
"Thank you, Bush. Thank you, USA," cried a deliriously happy Iraqi-American, reacting on television to the fall of Baghdad.
In fact, the report was one of many fakes created by the federal government to be planted on compliant local TV stations. The stations pretended the segments were prepared by real reporters, knowing they were actually propaganda generated by government PR hacks.
The rescue of Private Jessica, the enemy attack death of Pat Tillman, the fall of Saddams statue, the supposed Weapons of Mass Destruction all were lies planted in the news media by the ring-wingers, and subsequently exposed.
In fact, the overall story the administration tries to plant about the trillion-dollar Iraq occupation that it's successful is its most obvious lie.
Capitalizing on the success of ranting right-wing talk radio, in 1996 the right-wingers set up their own propaganda TV news channel.
Originally displaying a conservative bias, Fox News
has, for the last few years, displayed an exclusively pro-Bush bias. It is the Pravda of the Bush White House.
A $200-an-hour gay male prostitute named Jeff Gannon, a/k/a James Guckert, was able to get daily access to the White House press briefings for two years while working for a hack right-wing news service.
The fact that Gannon was a literal prostitute must have been icing on the propaganda cake for the White House another little giggle at the expense of the reporters they so despise.
Although Gannon lacked journalism training, he did have one slim credential in the field a ringing endorsement from Fox News Sean Hannity, who called him a terrific Washington bureau chief and White House correspondent for Talon News.
The right-wingers have waged a long campaign against journalism denouncing it, infiltrating it, faking it, extorting it, distorting it, planting male prostitutes in it and telling every manner of lie
about it.
In 1995, conservative strategist William Kristol told the New Yorker, "I admit it. The whole idea of the liberal media was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures." "

There is no such thing as objective reporting...Ive become even more crafty about finding the voices to say the things I think are true. Thats my subversive mission.
Boston Globe environmental reporter Dianne Dumanoski at an Utne Reader symposium May 17-20, 1990. Quoted by Micah Morrison in the July 1990 American Spectator.

Were unpopular because the press tends to be liberal, and I dont think we can run away from that. And I think were unpopular with a lot of conservatives and Republicans this time because the White House press corps by and large detested George Bush, probably for good and sufficient reason, they certainly can cite chapter and verse. But their real contempt for him showed through in their reporting in a way that I think got up the nose of the American people.
Time writer William A. Henry III on the PBS November 4, 1992 election-night special The Finish Line.

Personally, I have a great affection for CBS News....But I stopped watching it some time ago. The unremitting liberal orientation finally became too much for me. I still check in, but less and less frequently. I increasingly drift to NBC News and Fox and MSNBC.
Former CBS News President Van Gordon Sauter in an op-ed published January 13, 2005 in the Los Angeles Times.

I know a lot of you believe that most people in the news business are liberal. Let me tell you, I know a lot of them, and they were almost evenly divided this time. Half of them liked Senator Kerry; the other half hated President Bush.
CBSs Andy Rooney on the November 7, 2004 60 Minutes.

Theres one other base here: the media. Lets talk a little media bias here. The media, I think, wants Kerry to win. And I think theyre going to portray Kerry and Edwards Im talking about the establishment media, not Fox, but theyre going to portray Kerry and Edwards as being young and dynamic and optimistic and all, theres going to be this glow about them that some, is going to be worth, collectively, the two of them, thats going to be worth maybe 15 points.
Newsweeks Evan Thomas on Inside Washington, July 10, 2004.

Jack Cafferty: Can you say liberal? And the liberal talk radio station Air America debuts today....The question is, does America need additional liberal media outlets?...
Bill Hemmer: I think its a good question....Why hasnt a liberal radio station or TV network never taken off before?
Cafferty: We have them. Are you, did you just get off a vegetable truck from the South Bronx? Theyre everywhere....What do they call this joint? The Clinton News Network?

I am not a Republican. I am non-partisan. I have however leaned more toward the left than the right in the past. I have never voted for a Republican presidential candidate in my lifetime. I have voted in every Presidential election since 1988. I do not LOVE McCain, Palin, the GOP, or right-wing anything. I simply am choosing the lesser of two evils. I have a HUGE problem with people who cry about bias unless it's on their end (ie: ACORN-non-partisan my a$$, Bill Ayers, Rev. Wright, etc.). I don't agree that people who work their a$$es off to get a good education and make good money should be punished for it by being taxed so those who don't even pay taxes can get a stimulus check. I want my president to have more than a couple years experience as a Senator. I have no use for a president who feels that terrorists can be rehabilitated. I don't respect a president who doesn't support our troops as they defend our country's freedoms. I have a great dislike of someone who wants to bail out big companies (who then throw big $$ celebratory parties) rather than buy up bad mortgages to save the people. Obama is a bad seed. He's a product of Illinois politics. He has been evasive and secretive regarding his past and current associations. He ended his relationship with Rev. Wright only after the Rev.'s sermons were brought to light. He's not trustworthy, and if anyone believes a word he says they will get what they deserve if he gets into office. Unfortunately, s#i& runs down hill so the rest of us will suffer as well.

Does McCain have his own closet 'o skeletons? Sure. I just find them less offensive to my sensibilities than Barry's. "
