County board to vote on courthouse, jail repairs

CHARLESTON — The Coles County Board is expected to vote on funding repairs to an outside balcony at the courthouse and the roof at the jail.

One of the votes scheduled for the board’s meeting tonight is to transfer $30,000 from the county budget’s contingency fund to the building and grounds budget for those two repair projects.

Most of that money, $20,000, will go to repairing the deteriorating concrete of a balcony outside the courthouse’s second floor on the building’s west side. There’s no public access to the balcony from inside the building.

The cost of repair the jail roof is $31,000, and the rest of the money needed is already budgeted for the project.

Another vote involving this year’s budget will be on an amendment to reflect a $24,266 insurance payment for repairs to the courthouse roof because of storm damage from this spring; the insurance covered all but $1,000 of the repairs. Another budget amendment vote is to include a $14,000 grant the county Emergency Management Agency received to replace computers and to buy other equipment.

Other items on the agenda for the board’s meeting include:

n Awarding a contract to Howell Asphalt Co. for nearly $618,000 to resurface about 2½ miles of Old State Road from Lake Road to U.S. Route 45 and appropriating the money for the work.

n A presentation on the newly constructed waste transfer station at the Veolia Environmental Services facility on Illinois Route 316 west of Charleston.

n Adopting a resolution needed to support a grant application for home rehabilitation funds for Ashmore and Oakland.

n Authorizing a county surplus property auction, which would be the first for the county since 1999.

n A closed session to discuss pending litigation against the county.
