Director: MHS marching band starting year 'on a good note'
By NATHANIEL WEST, Staff Writer nwest@jg-tc.com
MATTOON — The Mattoon High School Pride of the Green Wave Marching Band has hit the ground running — well, marching — in the 2008 competition season.
The band placed first out of seven schools in its class and second overall at the Mt. Zion Music Games Competition on Sept. 20.
Considering this was the debut competition of the new season, the MHS band did “very, very well,” said director Todd Black.
“It was good to get started on a good note, no pun intended,” he said. “It’s very difficult to have the band totally prepared that early in the season, and the kids put in a great deal of work to be able to accomplish those goals.”
The band won in Class 1A with their show titled “Pirates of the Caribbean Tour 2008.” Additionally, the band earned first place both for percussion and color guard.
The MHS band also performed “Miranda!” for which percussion was awarded first place and the color guard came in second.
For combined field show and parade scores in all classes, the Pride of the Green Wave was named Runner-up Grand Champion at the Sept. 20 contest.
“It was a special day for us,” Black said.
Color guard instructors are Angi Black and Allison Christian. Drum major instructors are Mike Starwalt and Theresa Taylor. Percussion instructors are Dylan Dhom and Thurman Etchison.
The success at the first competition also bodes well for the rest of the season, which continues at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Effingham Marching Hearts Invitational, according to Black.
With about 30 bands slated to participate, it promises to be one of the biggest contests of the year, he said.

Also, thanks to the JG for the article on the band. As an alumni of the band it's always nice to read about them!
Again, Congrats and best wishes on a great season! "
