Candlelight vigil to honor domestic violence victims

CHARLESTON — A candlelight vigil to honor victims and survivors of domestic violence will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15, at Morton Park in Charleston.

The vigil is being hosted by HOPE (Housing, Outreach, Prevention, and Education).n Park and go until 8 p.m.

Motherlode will provide music at the beginning of the vigil.

Survivors of domestic violence are invited to share their stories in this atmosphere of hope and affirmation. The evening will conclude with a candlelight moment of silence in honor of local victims of violence.

The Clothesline Project will also be on display exhibiting t-shirts created by local victims of violence.

These shirts offer creative testaments of resistance to the violence that has touched the lives of too many women and children in our community.

According to a HOPE news release, an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault at the hands of an intimate partner each year.

“One in every four women will experience some form of domestic battery at some point in her lifetime. Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own families when they become adults,” the release said.
