Syeda Fatima, MD, joins SBL Family Medical Center
MATTOON — Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center officials announced the addition of family practice physician Syeda Fatima, MD, to its medical staff, according to a press release. She started caring for people at SBL’s Family Medical Center, Mattoon, in September.
Fatima received her medical degree from Deccan College of Medical Sciences in India in 2000, where she practiced for one year before relocating to the United States. Moving to Chicago, Fatima spent the next few years studying for the United States medical licensing examination.
In 2005, she was accepted into the Jackson Park Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Chicago, serving one year as co-chief resident and becoming chief resident her final year.
“It’s the only thing I ever wanted to do,” Fatima said of her decision to pursue medicine. Growing up in India, many of her family members were doctors, including her father, grandfather, uncle and several aunts. “I remember sitting in my father’s clinic as a child and imagining myself as a doctor,” she added.
Fatima said she enjoys the diversity of patients and challenges that she has experienced. “The most rewarding part of being a family practice doctor is being able to develop relationships and establish trust with people,” she said. “I enjoy people. I look forward to building strong relationships and being able to have a positive impact on families.”
Fatima intends to focus on preventive care. “I look forward to being able to help people and counsel them in making good decisions about their health. I try to promote healthy habits, like improving diet and exercise, to prevent heart disease and diabetes.”
