Casey Class of 1933 has 75-year reunion

CASEY — The Casey Township High School Class of 1933 had its historic 75-year class reunion on Sept. 11 at Richards Farm Restaurant.

There were 60 graduates in their class and there are now six classmates remaining. Those classmates were Lenore (Ault) Higgins and Thelma (Huddlestun) Walden of Newton; Anna Mae (Orand) Sparks of Mattoon; Robert McFarling of Indianapolis; Margaret (McDaniel) Rogers of Vandalia and Maxine (Neeley) Hanners of Greenup.

Others attending were Irene (Hawker) Hollensbee, class of 1934, and daughter Donna Nash of Hazel Dell; Barb Wisner of Mattoon; Marsha Rue of Casey; Bob McFarling Jr. of Indianapolis; Sharon Fitzmaurice of Willow Hill; Ruth Spraggins of Newton; Howard Stevens of Greenup; Wayne and DeAnn Ramsey of Casey, and Karen (Roan) Ford of Lawrenceville.

Classmate Ethel (Francis) Roan and class organizer died Aug. 25, just three weeks prior to the last reunion that she had planned.

Karen Ford brought many pictures and items collected and recorded of this class and donated to the newly formed Casey Historical Society.

The group of classmates opened with prayer remembering their deceased classmates. There was time to reminisce of their early school years, including traveling on the Old Doty Railroad in the “Cooter or Cooty” from Yale and Hazel Dell; riding the bus; and their many adventures.

One poem was read that had been written by classmate Forrest Wright, who died in April 2008. Another poem written by Robert McFarling was shared.

Anna Mae (Orand) Sparks, age 93, recited “The Raven,” by Edgar Allan Poe.

It was the consensus of the group that this would be the last reunion, unless they attended the GALA in 2010.
