EIU looks to regain its fire

Seeing some warning signs in Sunday’s football practice, Eastern Illinois coach Bob Spoo is trying to make sure his Panthers do not have a second straight flat performance.

“I thought our practice after a couple of days off was note quite as effervescent,” Spoo said Monday morning.

At least a couple of Panthers insisted they would be ready for the 6 p.m. Thursday game at UT Martin, their first game since the Sept. 27 loss to Jacksonville State in their Ohio Valley Conference opener.

With no game the past Saturday, EIU players had Friday and Saturday off to heal some injuries while coaches went on recruiting trips.

“It’s kind of rough when you have time off after a loss,” said junior Chris Vaccaro, switching from center to left guard this week. You want to get back out there. Everybody is ready right off the bat.”

Eastern is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the OVC going into the game against UT Martin, which is 4-2 and 2-1 after Saturday’s 30-27 overtime loss to Tennessee State.

"I don't know how you can't get up for a football game because that is what we live for," EIU defensive tackle Jeff Sobol said of EIU's previous loss. "We just lacked emotion but it's going to be there this time. Trust me."
