LETTER: GOP uses 'smoke and mirrors' in election

As a Christian Democrat, I was a “tiny bit” offended by some remarks in Mr. Pffiefer’s letter.

First of all, the Democrats are not promoting abortion or same sex marriages, which I personally don’t believe in abortion.

The Republicans bring these same two issues up in every election to keep the focus off the other problems. It’s called a “smoke screen” or “smoke and mirrors.”

It’s like Sarah Palin’s statement she believes in abstinence and birth control. (or, maybe it’s just the first one) I don’t really pay that much attention to the rhetoric.

There are serious issues in this election. People need jobs, gas, food, medicine and now our money system is failing (Wall Street and, I hope not the banks) and the newspeople themselves said it’s because of greed.

Well, who has been the party in charge for eight years?

Is it not time for change? In my opinion, I say yes to Obama-Biden.

" I thought this was one of the best letters in weeks. Just because someone is a Democrat does not mean that they are not religious, it does not mean that they don't support the soldiers, and it does not mean that they are for abortion and for same sex marriages. Often, Republicans and others try to define what a Democrat is, but it is lumping someone into a category and assuming way too much. In each party, there are liberal Repubs and conservatice Dems. In the last two comments, Mary points out that Repubs have held office the last eight years as our leader, and that it is our choice for a change, if we so desire. I just hope the elections don't get rigged, because that would be my worst fear. "

I agree, only if they are willing to work for it. But there are those who believe that everyone is entitled to equality in everything. I disagree.

The realization is that all people are not equal in work ethics and/or income and some believe they are entitled to be taken care of and that living in a free America means that everything is "free".

I don't trust Obama because of the circle he runs with and McCain is scary as well. Who is the worst evil? Considering where Obama is coming from I'd have to lean toward McCain.

I feel like I'm votin' for an Illinois governor all over again...and we see where that got us. You think it can't get any worse than with Bush just check out the Illinois political system. "

I am not talking about Ms. Humphreys principles because, quite frankly, her principles are relative to whatever she might be thinking. I have not read anywhere in the bible that secular humanism is an acceptable replacement for biblical teachings.

As far as Obama's stand on abortion and gay marriage, the author needs to conduct more research into his statements. You are obviously listening to Obama's rhetoric.

Smoke and mirrors, what about the democrats ability to stir the class warfare debate. Rich vs poor. Intelligence vs ignorance. Employed vs unemployed. Home owner vs renter. The fact that the Fannie and Freddie problems are democrat caused.

Society is not unlike your personal life in that many decisions you make today will affect the rest of your life. We are living with decisions that have been made starting with the New Deal programs from the depression era. Once the government gets involved we can never get them out. "

Falling into one of your traps, I wonder how one would justify the gay lifestyle based on evolution. Is not the gay person eliminating themself from nature? Or how about abortion? If the greatest majority of abortions have been from a minority race, have they not just reduced their power and influence? Maybe this is why some people are such strong advocates of them. "

" By MICHAEL COOPER
Published: October 4, 2008
SEDONA, Ariz. Stepping up the Republican tickets attacks on Senator Barack Obama, Gov. Sarah Palin on Saturday seized on a report about Mr. Obamas relationship with a former 1960s radical to accuse him of palling around with terrorists.

This is not a man who sees America as you see it, and how I see America, Ms. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, said in Colorado, according to a pool report. We see America as the greatest force for good in this world. If we can be that beacon of light and hope for others who seek freedom and democracy and can live in a country that would allow intolerance in the equal rights that again our military men and women fight for and die for all of us.

Our opponent though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that hes palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.

The article to which she referred, in The New York Times on Saturday, traced Mr. Obamas sporadic interactions with Bill Ayers, a founder of the Weathermen who later became an education professor in Chicago and worked on education projects there with Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for president.

The article said: A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers.

Ms. Palin seized on their relationship after the campaign of Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, said it planned to shift its strategy and try to turn the campaign into a referendum on Mr. Obama.

Well, I was reading my copy of todays New York Times and I was interested to read about Baracks friends from Chicago, Ms. Palin said at the fund-raiser in Englewood, Colo. Turns out one of Baracks earliest supporters is a man who, according to The New York Times, and they are hardly ever wrong, was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol. Wow. These are the same guys who think patriotism is paying higher taxes.

The Obama campaign responded by noting that McCain officials had been quoted as saying that they hoped to turn the page on the fiscal crisis, which has hurt Mr. McCains standing in the polls, and to devote more time to attacking Mr. Obama.

Governor Palins comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaigns statement this morning that they would be launching Swift-boat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nations economic ills, said Hari Sevugan, an Obama spokesman. Whats clear is that John McCain and Sarah Palin would rather spend their time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy.
-------------
Simple translation:

Old John with his under qualified and outspoken VP pick now realise they can't win on their merits and ideas so they will turn this campaign into a mud slinging, swift-boating, gutter dwelling affair.

John will stop at nothing to get the job he thinks he is owed, and the self promoting scheming opportunist he has chose to help him will be a willing partner in this slimy new tactic.

As for guilt by association, perhaps Palin should be exploring her long time relationship with the indicted Ted Stevens. Stevens has done more damage to this country that has Bill Ayers, who has managed to turn himself around and has become an award winning educator. While Stevens has accomplished nothing more than to bring billions of dollars worth of Palin style pork to Alaska, and managed to enrich himself along the way, similar to what the multi-millionaire, former poor boy Dick Cheney has done through a series of back door deals while in Washington. It should be noted that Palin was doing ads for by friend right up until his indictment. Then, just like George W dumped the long time Bush family friend Ken Lay, she seems to have developed amnesia over her long time friendship and relationship with Stevens.

At one time, I had respect for John McCain for all that he had gone through personally in his military service of our country, but after seeing how low he is willing to sink, that respect has evaporated into to disgust.

I have to laugh when I think of McCain's comments about having an honorable and respectful campaign a few months ago. "

Oh my, Obama has been hanging around with a University of Illinois professor -- just confirms what the Right Wing always fears: association with people of intelligence and particularly, ug, univ professors. Remember the 1950s when univ professors in Illinois had to take an oath that they were not and never had been Communists -- but businessmen who had contracts with the State were excused.

Ed Miller obviously has never read the McCain book in which he says that becoming president has AWAYS been his ambition, that he ran in 2000 not because of any particular principles but just because he wanted to be president. Working as a community organizer in south side Chicago would not ordinarily appear to be a path to the presidency.
