Driver ticketed for failing to yield in accident with two cars and motorcycle

MATTOON — Police on Wednesday released more details about a traffic accident Monday afternoon in which two cars collided in a busy Mattoon intersection and one of the cars was then propelled into a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was apparently unhurt; however, the driver of one of the cars was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center by Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service, said police.

It is unknown if either car driver was wearing a seat belt, police said. The motorcycle rider was not wearing a helmet, according to Officer Brad Gabel.

The accident occurred at 4:37 p.m. Gabel said witnesses and drivers reported that the traffic light at the intersection of Charleston Avenue and Logan Street was yellow at the time of the collision between the two cars.

In his report, Gabel said the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am driven by William T. Edwards, 17, of Mattoon was turning south on Logan Street from the westbound lane of Charleston Avenue when it was struck by the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Stephanie L. Graven, 29, of rural Charleston, which was eastbound on Charleston Avenue.

Carl A. Daniel, 54, of Ashmore was driving a 2000 Harley-Davidson Road King northbound on Logan Street, waiting to turn east on Charleston Avenue.

“The impact caused (Edwards’ car) to strike (the motorcycle),” Gabel said in his report.

Edwards was ticketed for failure to yield, according to the police report.
