EIU women’s soccer drops home opener 1-0

CHARLESTON -- Eastern Illinois women’s soccer once again played well defensively, giving up just three shots on goal, but was unable to score and lost its home opener to Wright State, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Jess Rooma’s team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute proved to be the difference in the game. She headed in the second of WSU’s five corner kicks.

Wright State (4-1), which has now won four straight, entered the game having scored multiple times in each of its first four games of the season and 11 times total.

Pam Melinauskas led Eastern (0-4-1) with three shots and nearly scored in the 15th minute. After Alexis Miller won possession of the ball with a nice slide tackle, Melinauskas got off a blast from the center of the field at about 20 yards out that sailed just high of the crossbar.

Kaitlin Sullivan and Ashley Eck had the best chances to tie the game. A little over a minute after the Raiders scored, Sullivan got free near the left post but didn’t get off a clean shot before a WSU defender disrupted the scoring chance. Her shot trickled harmlessly wide of the post.

In the 44th minute, Eck was left alone on the far left flank and the ball was played ahead to her. With the WSU defense closing up the open space to dribble toward the goal, the freshman attempted a long chip shot over the goalkeeper but saw her shot sail wide left.

Kaylin Lorbert made two saves in goal for Eastern. Defenders Sam Balek and Ashley Slota also played all 90 minutes. Sullivan led the reserves with 66 minutes of action.

Freshman Jessica Blake made her first start of the year. A season-high 19 Panthers saw action total.

Eastern has surrendered one goal or fewer in four of its first five games but is still looking for its first victory of the young season after being shutout four times as well.

The Panthers return to action Sunday, hosting Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m.
