Illinois Department of Natural Resources Hunter Safety Course scheduled

Area youths ages 9 and over and adults will have an opportunity to learn basic principles of safe hunting at an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Hunter Safety Education Course Oct. 10 and 11. The class will meet from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Boy Scout Cabin at the north end of Wyman Park in Sullivan and Oct. 11 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Sullivan (Purvis Farms) Gun Club. Both sessions are required to complete the course, according to IDNR Master Volunteer Instructor Joe Florini.

Illinois state law requires that all hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1980, successfully complete the hunter safety course before they can receive their first hunting license (except for the new apprentice hunting license, available to Illinois residents, age 10 and above, on a one-time renewable basis, with additional limitations. Participants completing the hunter education course receive a Hunter Education Certification card verifying that they have passed the course of instruction.

“This will be an excellent opportunity for young people who need the course in order to qualify for their hunting license”, according to Florini. “It can be beneficial for both beginning and advanced hunters, even those born before Jan. 1, 1980.”

The minimum 10-hour course includes instructions in wildlife management, firearm safety, hunter ethics, game identification, first aid, survival techniques and regulations.

For further information and to register for this course, contact Florini at 728-7325 (daytime) or 728-8837 (evenings) or Rick Montague at 728-7587 (evenings). Registration is limited to the first 45 participants. There is no fee for taking the course.
