Republicans hail McCain; party defends Palin

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — President Bush led a convention chorus of praise for John McCain Tuesday night, hailing him as a “ready to lead this nation” and a courageous candidate who risked his White House ambitions to support an unpopular Iraq war. Republicans rallied forcefully behind vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin in the face of fresh controversy.

Barack Obama drew criticism from the convention podium when Sen. Joseph Lieberman said the Democratic presidential candidate voted to cut off funding “for our troops on the ground” in Iraq last year. By contrast, Lieberman, who was the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee in 2000, said McCain had the courage “to stand against the tide of public opinion.”

McCain was in Pennsylvania and Ohio during the day, campaigning his way into the convention city where the 72-year-old Arizona senator will deliver his formal acceptance speech on Thursday night.

Hundreds of miles to the west, in St. Paul, about two dozen men who were Vietnam prisoners with him a generation ago sparked chants of “USA, USA” when they were introduced to the delegates.

Bush reprised the national security themes that propelled him to a second term as he spoke — briefly — from the White House. “We need a president who understands the lessons of Sept. 11, 2001,” he said in prepared remarks. “That to protect America, we must stay on offense, stop attacks before they happen and not wait to be hit again. The man we need is John McCain.”

Inside the convention hall, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson delivered a strong defense of Palin. He said the Alaska governor, was “from a small town, with small town values, but that’s not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family.”

He said McCain’s decision to place her on the ticket “has the other side and their friends in the media in a state of panic.”

Other Republicans — delegates and luminaries alike — defended Palin, who disclosed on Monday that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is pregnant. In addition, a lawyer has been hired to represent the governor in an ethics-related controversy back home in Alaska.

Conservatives, slow to warm to McCain even after he clinched the nomination last spring, were particularly supportive.

“I haven’t seen anything that comes out about her that in any way troubles me or shakes my confidence in her,” said former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who ran unsuccessfully for the party’s presidential nomination this year.

“All it has done for me is say she is a human person with a real family.”

And Ron Nehring, chairman of the California state party, said video footage of Palin on a firing range was helping her cause.

“The reports I’m getting back is that every time they show that footage we get 1,000 precinct walkers from the NRA,” he told members of his state’s delegation, to laughter. “She cuts taxes and shoots moose. That’s Gov. Palin,” Nehring said.

Thompson jabbed at Obama on abortion, as well.

“We need a president who doesn’t think that the protection of the unborn or a newly born baby is above his pay grade,” he said in prepared remarks, referring to a recent episode in which McCain’s White House rival said it was “above my pay grade” to decide the point at which an unborn child is entitled to rights.

There were indications that Republicans thought they could turn Palin-related controversy to McCain’s gain. Officials said Levi Johnston, the 18-year-old father of the baby Bristol Palin is expecting, was en route to the convention from his home in Wasilla, Alaska.

McCain’s wife, Cindy, took in the evening program from a VIP box. So, too, former President George H.W. Bush, accompanied by his wife Barbara.

Bush, with his approval ratings in the 30-percent range, was relegated to a relatively minor role at the convention of a party that has twice nominated him to the White House. The president scrapped a planned Monday night speech because of the threat Hurricane Gustav posed to New Orleans. With polls making it clear the nation is ready for a change, the McCain campaign indicated there was no reason for him to make the trip to St. Paul.

The president referred to the years of torture McCain endured as a prisoner of war. Then Bush added, “If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry left never will.”

“As president he will stand up to the high tax crowd in Congress ... and lift the ban for drilling on America’s offshore oil,” Bush added.

As for Palin, despite Thompson’s remarks — and McCain’s declaration that he was satisfied with the scrutiny his aides had given the governor before her selection— there were fresh disclosures.

Among them: that both as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and as governor, she had sought earmarks for local projects. Her most recent round of requests totaled $300 for every Alaskan. McCain has frequently vowed to veto any earmark legislation, and has said she will be a force in his battle to wipe them out.

Additionally, the lawyer hired to defend Palin in an ethics investigation said he also is representing her personally and is permitted to bill the state up to $95,000 for work in the current case. The issue involves the dismissal of public safety commissioner Walt Monegan after he refused to fire a state trooper who had divorced the governor’s sister.

Republicans handed Lieberman the prime spot in the evening lineup, and he blended praise for McCain with criticism of Obama.

“When others wanted to retreat in defeat from the field of battle, when Barack Obama was voting to cut off funding for our troops on the ground, John McCain had the courage to stand against the tide of public opinion,” the Connecticut Democratic-turned-independent senator said in excerpts released in advance of his speech.

The decision to place Lieberman out front on the convention’s second night capped an unprecedented political migration. Only eight years ago, he stood before a cheering throng at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles and accepted the nomination as Al Gore’s running mate.

In the years since, he lost badly in 2004 when he sought the Democratic presidential nomination, lost a Democratic nomination for a new term at home in Connecticut in 2006, then recovered quickly to win re-election as an independent.

Back in the Senate, his vote allows the Democrats to command a narrow majority, yet he has been one of the most outspoken supporters of the war in Iraq. He has traveled widely with McCain in recent months, and occasionally has angered Democrats with remarks critical of Obama.

One day after a frightening Gulf Coast hurricane prompted a subdued opening to the McCain convention, political combat enjoyed a resurgence.

McCain’s aides disputed a claim that vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin had once been a member of a third party — and accused Democratic rival Obama’s camp of spreading false information.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said that as far as he’d seen, “the only person talking about her being in the Alaska Independence Party is the head of the Alaska Independence Party.”

“Their gripe is with those folks,” he said of the McCain campaign.

Protesters outside the hall vowed to resume demonstrations that turned violent on Monday and resulted in 286 arrests.

Especially if against Bush, washington, special interests, corporations, big government, and much more. Out for his own interests, is pretty much all he could stand for, if everything he is suposed to be against is really true.

With all the riots and tear gas, since protests were overstated according to the JG/TC inside man at the other one, they might be really over stated here. This is the party of the party, most prone to gross exaggeration. If left on their own, most likely to put tourniquets on papercuts.

She has enough of her own baggage that we don't need to attack her, she's attacking herself. Should be interesting to see her speech tonight. On the matter of protesters, I find it amazing that they really need to use all this tear gas, arrest all these people... but in Denver they didn't have these problems? I wonder if it's all just grossly exaggerated and the police taking things into their own hands like the WTO event in Seattle years ago? "

" Humor might be found, in suddenly a presidential campaign should be handled as a white glove affair. For more than a year, every part and aspect of many candidates, were raked over the coals, drug through the mud, and spun with bias, to mis lead and misrepresent.

A no one from nowhere, gets thrust to the top, and its just cruel to probe into personal information like that all of a sudden. Had McCain submitted her answers to his questionare, he might have headed some of the rampant speculation off, but since it has been left to others, to fact check and substanciate anything represented about this woman, it is likely to be a very broad powerful telescope used to locate possible discrepencies, before they even begin to take microscopic looks at things. Simply taking politician John's word that she is acceptable, and qualified to be VP, is unreasonable even for die hard republicans. Prove it, should be welcomed and encouraged, if she is indeed the candidate they suggest, they could and would. Her speech tonight, will be picked over, questioned, fact checked, and analized. It won't take 5 days to accomplish. Before 6 days ago, she was unknown to the world. Now she is a candidate to be second in command of our portion of it. As citizens, we should want to know more. From a state with many corrupt governors in its history, we should not take for granted that the rank of governor is anything more than a title some one might hold, and has no direct reflection of the quality or capability of the person holding it. Too many people want things one way in one discussion, and no where near that, in something else. They haven't even talked to her past ministers, teachers, coaches, business aquaintences, and neighbors yet. Its only been 6 days. "

I know, I know, the media (myself included) are all out to destroy Sarah Palin's life. We're out to get her because we are monsters. We're sexist. We're great white sharks. We're great, white, sexist sharks. Inexplicably, we question Palin on her policy positions. Her desire to have certain books banned from the public library, her love of earmarks, her belief that women shouldn't be able to have an abortion even if they are raped.

We have spent time pointing out her husband's ties to a secessionist group. We've wondered aloud about why Palin opposes sex education in public schools, and then had the audacity to note the irony of her daughter's pregnancy. The horror! We've looked into two alleged cases of improper use of her executive power, and had the nerve to wonder why it took her so long to get a Passport. We've even questioned whether simply being the Governor of a state that is in close geographical proximity to Russia constitutes foreign policy experience. And shame on us for pointing out that Palin wants creationism taught in public schools, or that she called the war in Iraq "a task from God." Why should we bother to point out that Palin opposes stem cell research, or voted against pre-K education and has cut money from a high school dropout prevention program? After all, McCain's campaign manager assures us that "this election is not about issues."

In short, the media is guilty as charged with vetting Palin because John McCain did not. And who knows how long it'll be before his campaign will allow Palin to stand up and actually field questions from real reporters?

Yes, I think we all agree, life was much simpler in the cone of silence "

" Her speach was not as much about her, as it might have been. She had a chance to quiet some of the relavent questions, and lay some substance of what she hopes to accomplish or foster as vice president, for people to consider. She repeated most of her selection announcement speech, with more pause for applause party line lines. She continues to wander out on that bridge to nowhere thing, which she would have done well to drop.

It will take a lot more, than a republican script, to answer valid questions to many job related issues with her. After november the winners every response isn't a jab at their opponent. Is there anything non scripted to this gal, to say she is what the teleprompter says. John only met her once, and can't recall many things in his own life. So more than good ole John will have to ferret out the reality, of if she can fill the desk, or just keep the chair warm. Will she get interviewed by a pro, and think on her feet, or stick to the notes. Going two months without getting interviewed, probably won't cut it. I would hope not. Debates are another will she. Its still unclear if there is anything more than on the page in front of her. Scripted answers tend to be transparent, rather handily, once the controlled audience from the friendly podium aren't there to read the applause sign. She does give a good speech, though I don't care for the political pandering often done by both parties in these things. Have a plan, lay it out, state your goals, state some likely direction to reach them. Less Bs more info. In two months, the jabs are moot, and only any substance will possibly count. There wasn't much on substance tonight. Its likely John will follow suit. But being a maverick you just never really know. He may throw out a curve, or a hip. Odd that someone can be thrust to a bad hip away from the oval office, and give the same speech twice in a week with only a few modifications. Takes offense, to media curiosity, and she was no one outside of Alaska, less than a week ago. Family and closely personal stuff is non issues, but there is a lot that just don't automaticly jive, that isn't blood and or marriage defined. "

Political junkies would know better, but I think there really is no limit to how long a VP can serve if it happens under multiple administrations. It just hasn't come up yet.

Talk about a quick smooth transition. Except for having to lower the microphone on the presidential tantrum stand, it would be nearly seamless. If McCain got shin implants or wore lifts, it would be taylor fit. "

" Good grief. I had nearly lost track of how low the Dhimmicrat Party had sunk until reading this "news" article and the comments from Fellow Travelers below it.

What lowlife scum, to drag a 17 year-old girl into the slime in which you obviously live. Maybe if she had done the "right thing" (as per Femenista Doctrine) and aborted the child, she might be catching a break from the screeching ninnies. Nahhh. That ol' Party bigotry is stronger than any civility an untouchable Republican's actions might actually warrant.

What dishonest "reporting" it is to pointedly insinuate that Palin is in the cross-hairs of an ethics investigation when even amateur newshounds can scratch around and learn, factually, that the Alaska State Trooper who Palin wanted fired (and her Public Safety Commissioner tried to play the 'old boy' game and refuse her -- so she canned him, too) actually Tased his own 10-year-old stepson and had issued death threats to several family members, including Gov. Sarah Palin. How would you propose to defend that, or do the facts of a matter even count for anything with you Brownshirt thugs anymore?

And yet, if anyone is fool enough to depend on AP and the so-called mainstream media ("left-stream media" would be a more accurate handle) for factual information on ANY matter (nope, not even the weather), they would come away from reading this article believing that: "The issue involves the dismissal of public safety commissioner Walt Monegan after he refused to fire a state trooper who had divorced the governor's sister."

Well, there you have it. It must surely be a matter of official misconduct, plain and simple. A spiteful Governor throwing her weight around to punish an oaf for divorcing her sister. What a loathsome example of yellow journalism that whole article provides. And sure enough, the dependable sheep, besotted on the talking points Kool-Aid du jour, take the bait and run with it without a flinch of conscience or intelligence. Stamp those little feet in unison now; "Four legs good -- two legs bad!" Pathetic.

Even the headline is corrupt. To imply that there is actually some need for the Party to circle the wagons to "defend Palin" is (charitably) a gross distortion and a damnable breach of journalistic ethics. And that's just for starters. This article was couched as reportage, not a journalistic exercise in opinion-making.

Would AP like to imply Gov. Palin is as lined up at the earmarks trough as any of her predecessor Republican state officials? Hell, people, it's a matter of record and obvious to all but AP that Sarah Palin was the one who killed the "Bridge To Nowhere" boondoggle, taking on entrenched Republican and Democrat ol' boys alike. If AP's objective is to squander what shred of credibility it may once have had, articles like this will serve them just dandy. And those who parrot such dishonest crap will earn the same derision.

The jackass party shifted so far left in the '60s there's little hope for it anymore. Now, it's the party of infanticide, cowardice, mob rule, screeching disruption (RIP dialogue), Marxism, amorality and intellectual dishonesty. Once upon a time, Democrats were a party of substance and principle, but I guess that all died with the Johnson Coup. Today's DNC wouldn't let a JFK in the door. And who even dares mention today that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican? "Heresy!" cried Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Jeremiah Wright in unison. Yep. If there is a MLK kindred on the political landscape today, he's bound to be disparaged as an "oreo." This is a big, pervasive illness.

It's been a truly sickening devolution of a major political party to witness (yeah, I'm of sufficient vintage to remember that black day in Dallas), and judging by the patently juvenile responses to this AP hatchet job -- granted, a mediocre one, there are plenty of slimier ones out there if you can stomach the dishonesty-- there's not much reason to hope that the recovery to once again being a respectable and serious Democratic Party will come about anytime soon.

So be it and the several other degenerate social movements now interred in the ash heap of history. "

I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening.

We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.
---------
In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers.

And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.

They're the ones whose names appear on laws and landmark reforms, not just on buttons and banners, or on self-designed presidential seals.
---------
On the other hand, you have a resume from a gifted man with an Ivy League education. He worked as a community organizer. What? He worked -- I said -- I said, OK, OK, maybe this is the first problem on the resume.

He worked as a community organizer. He immersed himself in Chicago machine politics.

Then he ran for -- then he ran for the state legislature and he got elected. And nearly 130 times, he couldn't make a decision. He couldn't figure out whether to vote "yes" or "no." It was too tough.

He voted -- he voted "present."

I didn't know about this vote "present" when I was mayor of New York City. Sarah Palin didn't have this vote "present" when she was mayor or governor. You don't get "present." It doesn't work in an executive job. For president of the United States, it's not good enough to be present.

You have to make a decision.
-------------
A few years later -- a few years later, he ran for the U.S. Senate. He spent most of his time as a celebrity senator: no leadership, no legislation to really speak of.

His rise is remarkable in its own right. It's the kind of thing that can happen only in America.

But he's never -- he's never run a city. He's never run a state. He's never run a business. He's never run a military unit. He's never had to lead people in crisis.

He is the least experienced candidate for president of the United States in at least the last 100 years.

Not a personal attack, a statement of fact. Barack Obama has never led anything, nothing, nada.

Nada, nothing.
----------
For -- for four days in Denver, the Democrats were afraid to use the words "Islamic terrorism."

I imagine they believe it is politically incorrect to say it. I think they believe it will insult someone. Please tell me, who are they insulting if they say "Islamic terrorism"? They are insulting terrorists.
-------------
Obama -- Obama promised to take public financing for his campaign, until he broke his promise.

Obama -- Obama was against wiretapping before he voted for it.

When speaking to a pro-Israeli group, Obama favored an undivided Jerusalem, like I favor and like John McCain favored. Well, he favored an undivided Jerusalem -- don't get too excited -- for one day, until he changed his mind.

Well, I'll tell you, if I were Joe Biden, I'd want to get that V.P. thing in writing.
------------
Obama's -- talk about judgment. Let's look at what Obama did. Obama's first instinct was to create a moral equivalency, suggesting that both sides were equally responsible, the same moral equivalency that he's displayed in discussing the Palestinian Authority and the state of Israel.

Later -- later, after discussing this with his 300 foreign policy advisers, he changed his position, and he suggested the United Nations Security Council could find a solution.

Apparently, none of his 300 foreign policy security advisers told him that Russia has a veto power in the United Nations Security Council.

By the way, this was about three days later. So -- so he changed his position again, and he put out a statement exactly like the statement of John McCain's three days earlier.

I have some advice for Senator Obama: Next time, call John McCain.
---------
Gov. Palin represents a new generation. She's already one of the most successful governors in America and the most popular.

And she's already had more executive experience than the entire Democratic ticket combined.

She's been a mayor. I love that.

I'm sorry -- I'm sorry that Barack Obama feels that her hometown isn't cosmopolitan enough.

I'm sorry, Barack, that it's not flashy enough. Maybe they cling to religion there.
--------
One final point. And how -- how dare they question whether Sarah Palin has enough time to spend with her children and be vice president. How dare they do that.

When do they ever ask a man that question? When?

Which would be a bit of a problem with carrying out Commander in Chief duites.

I blew a few smoke rings, remembering those years. Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though (Barack Obama, Dreams From My Father, page 93, paperback edition. http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/streetterms/ByAlpha.asp?strTerm=B, Blow = Cocaine; to inhale cocaine; to smoke marijuana; to inject heroin)

Under guidelines for issuing a clearance:

The circumstances of an individuals drug use provide indicators of the severity of a current problem or the likelihood that a past problem will recur in the future.2

Age: Early initiation of drug use is one of the best predictors of future drug abuse and dependence. Individuals whose drug use started before high school (age 14 or younger) are more vulnerable to drug problems later in life than those who started using drugs in high school or college. Initiation of drug use between age 15 and 18 is common. Drug use usually peaks during the senior year in high school or in college (age 17 to 23). Continuation of peak usage after college (or age 23) indicates potential for future problems. Initial experimentation with drugs after college (or age 23) is unusual and suggests future problems.

Increased maturity and lifestyle changes that usually accompany employment, marriage, or the birth of children often lead to reduction or cessation of drug use. Continuation of the same social environment in which past drug use occurred suggests that use may continue.

Not only would it present a problem obtaining a security clearance, but he might have a bit of trouble obtaining a clearance sufficient enough to handle the Nuclear Football, not being cleared under the Nuclear Weapon Personnel Reliability Program.

2) Drug Abuse

(a) See definition 15. in enclosure 2. It is not the intent of this Directive to automatically render ineligible for the PRP any individual who, before the effective date of this Directive, has disclosed pre-Service drug abuse, or who has not yet been asked to make such disclosure,
and who is currently certified for PRP duties after having been formally screened in accordance with then-existing guidance. Further recertification of such individuals for future PRP status shall be in accordance with this Directive, except that previously disclosed and considered drug abuse and pre-Service drug use not required previously to be disclosed, shall not be sole grounds for denial of recertification or for mandatory decertification.

(b) Except for the category of individuals identified in subparagraph B.2.a.(2)(a), above, or otherwise provided in this Directive, any pre-Service use, admitted or otherwise discovered, of illicit drugs such as heroin, heroin derivatives, cocaine, crack, phencyclidine (PCP), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), ecstasy, or other designer drugs,

Under the new guidlines of Palin Discovery that the MSM has employed recently, I submit this to the media for thoughtful analysis and consideration.

And the Democrats are all in a tizzy over Todd Palin's DUI 22 years ago!

If only they had been so concerned over Ted Kennedy's over done drinking and the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, Bill Clinton's not inhaling, and now Ba-Rack's [I blew a few smoke rings, remembering those years. Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it.] choices. "

Ben Smith in Politico:

"I can't remember the last introduction to the national scene this rocky, and it gets worse every hour -- and even before the investigative reporters have settled in to Anchorage.

Just got off the flight to St. Paul to find, in my inbox: a second source confirming her past membership in a secession-minded fringe group, her lawyering up in an inquiry the AP slugged "Troopergate," and -- insult to injury -- another woman claiming she was actually Miss Congeniality in the Miss Wasilla '84 contest.

The name on the tongues of gleeful Dems, meanwhile: Eagleton." "

National Enquirer alleges Sarah Palin affair

"Sarah Palin's DARK SECRETS!
Affair that nearly ruined her career"

Well, it won't be nearly, if this turns out to be true. The Enquirer had the goods on John Edwards way before anyone else did.

Naturally the McCain campaign is calling the story a "vicious lie." That's always the first response, so I don't give the denial much credence.

I like the National Enquirer's response:

"The National Enquirer's coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin's extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor's daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards' exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign's vetting process. Despite the McCain camp's attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum."

We'll just have to wait and see how this turns out. The Enquirer pays its sources, and Palin has made quite a few enemies in Alaska. "

" I saw some footage, with carl rove down just off stage, taking notes, while Palin was speaking. Very interesting. Is it possible he is writing or tweeking her 1 speech.

Just after the McCain speach, the pbs commentators noted many lines taken from previous democrat speeches. They also noted his throw the bums out we have in, ending, and the rest failed to answer any questions as to how he planed to do any of the things he broadly touched on he might.

I think it was good they saved the Palin intro video, for tonight. It was mostly the exact same thing she has already read to us twice, but in a mans voice this time. There still out on that bridge to nowhere, but cindy did rework the mother theresa orphanage story, and included a photo of her as eference, rather than orating it the way she has.

It was odd in the republican's terrorists video, they didn't have the US handing them guns and money, and training them, to fight Russia, back in the 80's.

I have to commend folks here, for not tearing into the republican shabby sign brigade. The crowd looked like many preschools were pulling overtime, to finger paint a lot of them. "

" Actually, ed miller, it's a shame that the National Enquirer is the one vetting Palin. McCain's handlers did a poor job of it.

Don't forget that it was the National Enquirer that outed John Edwards. And I don't recall any opposition to their credibility or reporting over that disclosure.

And ed, in case you haven't noticed, the National Enquirer is just one small piece of the puzzle.

Only time will tell.

This story gets better by the day.... "

If we're to believe that trash magazines or the likes of the National Enquirer is such a totally believable reporting source, should we also believe in the likes of these?

Personally, I think it's sad, for any story, even the John Edwards story, whatever it entails, like I even care, if people have to use the likes of these trash mongers, to even attempt to substantiate claims, no matter who they're about, or against, from both sides of the aisle.

Personally, leave the likes of the National Enquirer to "The Men In Black" to help them find their aliens.

Geesh, & I thought I was a real goober at times.

Ann Coulter wasn't officially invited to speak at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference -- many on the right were still upset at the bad publicity she brought last year after calling John Edwards a "faggot." But to no one's surprise, she showed up anyway, commandeering the spotlight.

Speaking before the Young America's Foundation, who invited her over CPAC's objections, the conservative author spent most of her time viciously attacking her party's new presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain.

No topic was out of bounds, including the five years McCain spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

"I know that [he was a POW]," Coulter declared, "because he mentions it more often than Kerry mentions he was in Vietnam. There were hundreds of POWs and we are not going to make all of them president. Can't we find a POW who doesn't want to shut down Guantanamo." "

That if we won the Congressional elections, we could stop the war. Now anybody was a good student of Government would know that wasn't true.
