Panthers to start 2010 season at Iowa

CHARLESTON -- An opening game at Iowa is to start the 2010 Eastern Illinois football schedule.

Scheduling of the game at Iowa, reported last week, was officially released by both schools on Monday.

This means that after never playing a Big Ten Conference football opponent until the 2006 season, Eastern now is playing one five years in a row.

The Panthers took on Illinois in 2006 and Purdue last season, are to visit Illinois again Saturday in an 11 a.m. Big Ten Network game, are contracted to visit Penn State next year and now have the 2010 opener against Iowa.

Iowa has played four teams from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision level since the 1999 season when current head coach Kirk Ferentz took over the program. The Hawkeyes are coming off a season opening 46-3 win over FCS member Maine.

Eastern is starting this season against two Football Bowl Subdivision teams. The Panthers lost a 31-12 opener Thursday at Central Michigan.
