OUR VIEW: Biden should be an interesting VP slugger to watch

U.S. Sen. Joe Biden jogged across the stage in front of the Old State Capitol in Springfield Saturday to embrace Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Biden, elected to the U.S. Senate at the age of 29, having served in the body for more than 36 years, 65 years of age, delivered a vigorous speech.

Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has extensive experience in foreign policy — something Obama lacks.

He also has strong support among blue-collar workers in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other big electoral states. Many of them are Reagan Democrats.

Obama passed over Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, after he won the nomination. The primary campaign was hard-fought, ending in a dead heat.

Obama narrowly defeated Clinton in the elected delegates, and narrowly lost the popular vote to Clinton. Both racked up more than 18 million votes.

Clinton won in most of the blue-collar states.

Obama’s choice of Biden was intended to shore up his deficiencies in foreign affairs and to attract the blue-collar voter, whose support is expected to be critical in the fall. It remains to be seen if Biden’s selection will enable Obama to garner the support Clinton enjoyed in the big industrial states — states the Republicans have been winning.

Biden is well-regarded in the Senate by both Democrats and Republicans, a rare thing in Washington today where bipartisanship has surrendered to gridlock.

He is a friendly man, but unlike Obama, Biden is a bare-knuckles campaigner. Although Biden is a close friend of Republican John McCain’s, he isn’t expected to go easy on the Vietnam War hero.

The exercise in energy displayed by Biden’s bounce across the stage and his animated speech reflects the senator’s enthusiasm for politics.

The main criticism of Biden in political circles is he doesn’t know when to shut up. He tends to be long winded. Biden, like McCain, often speaks his mind, which sometimes gets him in trouble.

Biden has overcome a lot of things in his life. He lost his first wife and daughter in a traffic accident which also critically injured his two sons. He survived two aneurysms in his brain. He talked his way out of stuttering, which may help explain the excessive verbiage.

It will be interesting to see how the friendship of the Delaware liberal and the Arizona conservative will be affected as they exchange blows during the fall campaign.

McCain is expected to announce his choice for vice president later this week. If he or she is as spirited as Joe Biden, the fall campaign will be thunderous.

The fury shaping up in the race for the White House comes as no surprise.

As rough and tumble as presidential election campaigns are, they test the mettle of the candidates.

For over 19 months the presidential hopefuls have gone at it — far too long, most Americans would agree.

But, it’s succeeded beyond all expectations in reaching out to millions of Americans. Both parties harnessed the power of the Internet to help send young voters to the polls and raise millions of dollars through millions of individual contributions.

The Republican National Convention kicks off next week.

We’re looking forward to commenting on McCain’s choice for vice president.

The betting’s on another slugger like Biden.

Hey it worked Putting the unknown Quale on the ticket, not so long ago. Now he can be more compared to george sr, than jr. With some alaskan govenment officials, being under investigation, I would think they might have just been the most surprized at the pick. Now the press and others, will be headed to the top of the world, to find out any thing they can, in two months.

I hope the anticipated slugfest is avoided. Stick to issues, facts, and policy, even with all the opportunity for attack this pick opens up. directly attacking a woman, new mom, child with downs, and several other don't pick on those people issues, I am sure, it just makes it petty. Part of several reasons for it I am sure. Not as likely to go right at her. Unknown candidate, so it would take a brigade of archaeologists, to sift with dynamite, to dig up as much dirt as McCain has had cleaned off by someone else from his expensive shoes, since the last time he ran for office.

Frankly Politics is a persuit, someone usually isn't just thrown into it, they want to be there. But i'm a girl, shouldn't change it. Equality of pay, equality of price should be expected, as crass as that sounds. When it is over, she may be lucky to still be Governor of Alaska. But that McCain sure is a maverick, aint he. Hopefully the defenition of maverick isn't changed to reflect what this campaign is. Just like it being mistakenly used, like much of the english and sometimes spanish language among others were in the Bush administrations.

Don't Haul of and slug her Biden, but send a few warning shots across the bow, and ship her back to the Northern lights. Hard to think a more out of touch person could have been found than McCain. Him being the one to do it, reinforces just how much so he is. Baseball season is over in October, But count on McCain/Palin to be out there manning left field, in November. "

" The Vice President of the United States[1] is the first person in the presidential line of succession, becoming the new President of the United States upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president, serving out the balance of that presidential term no matter how much or little time remains in it. Every presidential term ends on January 20 of the year immediately after a presidential election. As designated by the Constitution of the United States, the vice president also serves as the President of the Senate, and may break tie votes in that chamber.[2] He or she may be assigned additional duties by the president but, as the Constitution assigns no executive powers to the vice president, in performing such duties he or she acts only as an agent of the president.

Considering Mccain's age, there is a very good chance that she would have to take over. Of course its only speculation on the part of myself and others, but she does seem to lack the experience needed to do the job.

You have to admit her resume is rather thin. Small town mayor and only in the second year as governor of one of the least populated state in the country is not very impressive for a person who would sit a heartbeat away from the presidency.

In your attempt to downplay the importance of the position, I think you are missing the points of those who criticize Palin for her extreme lack of experience, ed.

I find the experience issue rather ironic considering that McCain has made such an issue of Obama's lack of time in government. I doubt that he will be talking about political experience, now that he has picked someone who is practically a political novice.

Historically very few VP's have helped the ticket in the way that you seem to think. LBJ would be the most notable exception.

I would also note that if McCain was picking a woman to get the disgruntled Clinton voters, he made a poor choice, considering that she is completely opposite of Hillary on about almost every issue, such as abortion for example.

I'm not saying she won't draw some of the disgruntled Hillary people, but I doubt it will be a lot. Those that leave the Democratic party to vote for McCain will be doing it out of revenge, and certainly not for political ideology. That seems rather shallow to me.

Personally I would have been more comfortable if he had chosen someone like Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Elizabeth Dole. I really don't care for either of their politics, but I think the country would be better off with one of them at the helm, than having a political rookie in the most powerful and important job in the world.

There are reports that McCain had only met this woman one time before making his decision. If that's true, it sounds like he made the decision last minute. If that's an example of his decision making process we could be in big trouble. McCain's reputation as a hot head is rather well documented, but adding shoot from the hip decision making to that should scare the hell out of us.

If the stories circulating on the Net are true about the firing of her ex-brother-in-law are true, than it sounds like she might be the type of person who uses her position to punish her enemies. That's the type of VP we've had for the last 8 years, and do we really want another Cheney in that office? "

" Just wait till the lawsuit filed against Obama and his false claim of being a natural born US citizen hits.

"Phillip Berg, the filing attorney, is a former gubernatorial and senatorial candidate, former chair of the Democratic Party in Montgomery (PA) County, former member of the Democratic State Committee, and former Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania. According to Berg, he filed the suit--just days before the DNC are to hold its nominating convention in Denver--for the health of the Democratic Party.

"I filed this action at this time," Berg stated, "to avoid the obvious problems that will occur when the Republican Party raises these issues after Obama is nominated."

Berg cited a number of unanswered questions regarding the Illinois senator's background, and in the lawsuit documents maintained that Sen. Obama is not a naturalized U.S. citizen or that, if he ever was, he lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia. Berg also cites what he calls "dual loyalties" due to his citizenship and ties with Kenya and Indonesia.

Even if Sen. Obama can prove his U.S. citizenship, Berg stated, citing the senator's use of a birth certificate from the state of Hawaii verified as a forgery by three independent document forensic experts, the issue of "multi-citizenship with responsibilities owed to and allegiance to other countries" remains on the table.

In the lawsuit, Berg states that Sen. Obama was born in Kenya, and not in Hawaii as the senator maintains. Before giving birth, according to the lawsuit, Obama's mother traveled to Kenya with his father but was prevented from flying back to Hawaii because of the late stage of her pregnancy, "apparently a normal restriction to avoid births during a flight." As Sen. Obama's own paternal grandmother, half-brother and half-sister have also claimed, Berg maintains that Stanley Ann Dunham--Obama's mother--gave birth to little Barack in Kenya and subsequently flew to Hawaii to register the birth.

Berg cites inconsistent accounts of Sen. Obama's birth, including reports that he was born at two separate hospitals--Kapiolani Hospital and Queens Hospital--in Honolulu, as well a profound lack of birthing records for Stanley Ann Dunham, though simple "registry of birth" records for Barack Obama are available in a Hawaiian public records office.

Should Sen. Obama truly have been born in Kenya, Berg writes, the laws on the books at the time of his birth hold that U.S. citizenship may only pass to a child born overseas to a U.S. citizen parent and non-citizen parent if the former was at least 19 years of age. Sen. Obama's mother was only 18 at the time. Therefore, because U.S. citizenship could not legally be passed on to him, Obama could not be registered as a "natural born" citizen and would therefore be ineligible to seek the presidency pursuant to Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution.

Moreover, even if Sen. Obama could have somehow been deemed "natural born," that citizenship was lost in or around 1967 when he and his mother took up residency in Indonesia, where Stanley Ann Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian citizen. Berg also states that he possesses copies of Sen. Obama's registration to Fransiskus Assisi School in Jakarta, Indonesia which clearly show that he was registered under the name "Barry Soetoro" and his citizenship listed as Indonesian.

The Hawaiian birth certificate, Berg says, is a forgery. In the suit, the attorney states that the birth certificate on record is a forgery, has been identified as such by three independent document forensic experts, and actually belonged to Maya Kasandra Soetoro, Sen. Obama's half-sister.

"Voters donated money, goods and services to elect a nominee and were defrauded by Sen. Obama's lies and obfuscations," Berg stated. "If the DNC officers ... had performed one ounce of due diligence we would not find ourselves in this emergency predicament, one week away from making a person the nominee who has lost their citizenship as a child and failed to even perform the basic steps of regaining citizenship as prescribed by constitutional laws."

"It is unfair to the country," he continued, "for candidates of either party to become the nominee when there is any question of the ability to serve if elected." "

John McCain Born in Panama, can he even be President?

The Constitution clearly states only those born in the United States may be President.

This is not open to interpretation or overturned by the 14th Amendment as it is very clear in the Constitution that the founders were being very specific on who could be the President.

The 14th Amendment was not written to change the rules of who could be the President, it was to determine citizenship. Citizenship does not allow just anyone to be the President. Only those born in the United States have that privilege.

Although John McCain was born in Panama many would argue that he was born in a US territory and is considered a US citizen. Being a citizen is not the litmus test the founders directed when they wrote the requirements to become the President.

A territory is not the United States. The United States is one of the 50 states. If Panama was a state things would be different. However Panama is a sovereign Country.

If this were the case, then we would have to allow all children born on US territories to be naturalized citizens. For example, if an Iraqi woman has an American service mans baby in a hospital in Iraq that happens to be a US Military base, then the baby would be born in US territory. This is not what the founders would have contemplated as a US naturalized citizen.

While this is probably an issue the courts would most likely rule that McCain is fully eligible to be the President, I my self would not vote for a person who is questionably walking a fine line on the founding fathers rule of Presidential eligibility.

A federal judge in California has been asked to determine whether McCain meets the legal test to hold the nations highest office. Although McCain has called questions about his eligibility nonsense, his campaign, as it did in his first White House run in 2000, sought a review from legal experts to put the issue to rest.

Based on the original meaning of the Constitution, the Framers intentions, and subsequent legal and historical precedent, Senator McCains birth to parents who were U.S. citizens, serving on a U.S. military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936, makes him a natural born citizen within the meaning of the Constitution, the review found. Are you kidding me? Saddam tested weapons on his people. 600,000 on the very low side were estimated to die under Hussein's rule although many believe that number is closer to the 1,000,000 range.

And since when do the suicide bombings deaths of foreign radicals get blamed on the US. You can say what you want but 80% of Iraqis would take what they have now over what it was like before. (And if you don't believe talk to some soldiers who have actually been there) Because now at least they know that each day things get better for Iraqis. For a country that has to deal with all the messes of this war Americans whine about it more than they do. Iraq could've been much, much worse. After we pulled out on them after the gulf war its amazing that every Iraqi didn't pick up an AK and fire on us back in 2003. The fact that they didn't just shows us how fed up they were with Sadamm's rule.

Whether or not the reasons for going to war were justified or not WERE THERE. We started the mess so now we have to finish it. Until the Iraqis can secure their own county (which will be very soon) we have to finish the job. Its that simple. Otherwise youre going to see the 25,000,000 million people of Iraq wanting revenge against the US. It would take several generations to ever hope to regain any sort of peaceful relations with the citizens of Iraq. "
