Oakley to be Charleston's AD

CHARLESTON -- Already coaching three sports, Brad Oakley is adding athletics director duties in his second year at Charleston.

“I’ve been working on my administrative degree for a while,” Oakley said. “This is a step in the right direction. I like being around the kids in different sports. It seems like a great fit.”

The former Cumberland boys’ basketball head coach who came to Charleston last year, Oakley is Charleston’s girls’ cross country and boys’ track head coach and after helping with boys’ basketball on a volunteer basis last season now is to coach the freshman boys.

He is taking the high school athletics director job with Jerry

Calandrilla leaving on Sept. 12 to become Sullivan Middle School’s principal.

“Brad is a class act, an excellent role model for young men and young women and will do a great job,” Calandrilla said. “He’s got a great global view of the entire athletic department.”

Whether Oakley continues his current coaching load and the new administrative position beyond this school year is to be determined.

“I really don’t know,” he said. “A lot of it will be at the end of the year talking with the board and administration and see how things go. I don’t know if anyone knows how it’s going to turn out and what’s going to happen.

“The biggest thing for me now is to get in and see how things work and get together with the board and administration to see what direction we want to go. I just want to work with coaches and help them be successful.”
