State to lay off 450, close parks and historic sites
Lincoln Log Cabin, Hidden Springs, Wolf Creek on list

Updated 2:35 p.m. SPRINGFIELD -- The Blagojevich administration is planning to lay off more than 450 workers and close nearly two dozen state parks and historic sites in response to the state’s lingering budget impasse.

Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site in Coles County ,  Hidden Springs State Forest in Strasburg  and Wolf Creek State Park, Windsor are scheduled to close.

One union official described the plan as a “bloodbath” that will have wide-ranging effects on the services provided to state taxpayers.

Union officials said the Department of Children and Family Services will lose 304 workers, while the Department of Human Services will be cut by 73 employees.

An incomplete and unofficial list of parks targeted for closure includes Hidden Springs State Forest in Shelby County and several others in central and northern Illinois.

Historic sites that will close include the David Davis Mansion in Bloomington, Lincoln Log Cabin near Charleston, the Bryant Cottage in Bement, the Cahokia Courthouse and Bishop Hill.

Details of when the parks and sites will be shuttered were not immediately available.

On Thursday, 43 unionized workers at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and 34 employees of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency received notice that they would be laid off in late October.

Blagojevich has said the cuts are necessary because he slashed $1.4 billion from the state’s spending plan in July. He says the Democrat-controlled legislature wanted to spend more money than the state will receive in the coming fiscal year.

State Sen. Dave Luechtefeld, R-Okawville, said the governor is trying to force the General Assembly to return to Springfield to approve new revenue streams.

“I know he’s trying to make people feel the pain,” Luechtefeld said.

The latest cuts come as other state agencies are grappling with the effects of the governor’s actions.

Blagojevich also has tied his plan to close Pontiac Correctional Center to the budget impasse.

The cuts at the Department of Natural Resources are troubling to some lawmakers because the agency has already lost scores of workers.

“It’s obviously unfortunate,” said state Rep. Kurt Granberg, D-Carlyle.

Granberg, who is retiring as a lawmaker in January, said it will be a challenge rebuilding the state park system if money is ever restored to reopen them.

“It’s going to be a hard road,” Granberg said.

Luechtefeld agreed, saying historic preservation sites are at risk of being vandalized if they are shuttered and left unattended.

“These are agencies that had already been cut to the core before these cuts,” Luechtefeld.

" Personally my mother, and countless others, are faceing a possible layoff from a state funded facility that offers treatment for drug and alcohol addictions. This is yet another program that has fallen throught the cracks of our government. So the residents of these facilities will either face being thrown in the street or back to prison. Which in fact will cost much more than to keep this program running. If in fact these residents are released, the crime rate will continue to rise, due to not being offered the treatment they are in need of. I think this is ludacris to lay-off employees of DCFS and DHS, knowing that their caseloads are extrememly high now. With the forced lay-offs and lack of employment opportunities, these caseworkers are going to be consumed with new cases. As far as DCFS goes, isnt there enough child abuse and neglect going on now that either they do not have time for or is "unfounded" due to lack of investigation. So, what do we do, continue to allow these children to be abused since we will now have less caseworkers? I think the government of the State of Illinois need to evaluate and reorganize their priorities.....just a thought. "

So there's 2 people we could cut! The third person told me I would have to complain to my legislator because they were the ones who cut the budget. So I called Chapin Rose's office they said I could write a letter or call and they would log my name, address, and phone #. So I had her put me on the complaint list. Here's the number 348-7673. "

To bad we can't layoff the governor though. Sure would save us all a lot of money.

CD I like the Used Car Salesman picture for him, it is fitting.

(Picture him jumping up and down on a map of the state , like the salesman on a car)
"You want layoffs, we got layoffs, you want businesses closed we can do that too, you want us to waist your money no prob. How can we promise all that? Cause we are going crazy!! Things actually never appeared to be improving, our former governor was headed to jail, and he did horrible things, but our state actually functioned on a day to day basis. Blago does horrible things and the state doesn't function. He gives himself and the elected officials raises while cutting the budgets and salaries of lower paid state employees. He throws fits when he doesn't get his way and hurts anyone he can to make a point. Illinois was wise enough to elect a man with a three year old personality - and we elected him twice (I never voted for him, but obviously all the dead people in Chicago did). It's truly appalling. What the heck is it going to benefit the state to have all these people become depressed welfare recipients?

Blago and all his cousins should be forced out before they do further damage. He seems to have the knack for "Seek and Destroy". Why is he allowed to do this to Illinois? "

" This may be seen as sacrilege here, but how important is it to keep open a home once lived in by Lincoln's father and step father that Lincoln visited a few times? In 150 years, will the government be maintaining the homesteads of George H.W. and Barbara Bush as historical sites? Okay, bad president so bad example. But do we have the government supporting homes where John F. Kennedy's parents once lived (but he didn't) or FDR's, or Eisenhower's, or Reagan's, etc. etc.? Just because Lincoln visited there doesn't make the place relevant, and even if the living history presentations are interesting, sometimes you have to set priorities. I'm far more distraught by the cuts to the DCFS -- the loss of field workers to protect abused children -- than I am the loss of costumed interpreters pretending it's 1850. "

I agree!

Dick Durbin's "crime" was that he told the truth about Abu Ghraib. I was disappointed that he backed off his statements after they were taken out out context, as usual, by the right wing smear machine headed by Fox news and the radio drama queen, Rush Limbaugh. Saying that he was disappointed to see our troops using the same tactics as the Gestapo used is NOT the same thing as calling our troops Gestapo, as was reported by that bunch using their delusional spinning tactics.

I wish all Democrats would stop being cowed by that bunch. They only get louder and more shrill when they are able to get someone to back down. Fox news and the radio wackos need to be called out for their lies and shilling for the Republican party.

It will be interesting to see if the Dems allow them self to be Swift boated again with lies, distortions, and half truths as was done to John Kerry the last time around.

John McCain was defeated by Bush who did the same thing to him, so I would imagine he sees the benefit of using Karl Rove type tactics and will no doubt use them himself. "

This is politics and the demos are as bad or, in my humble opinion, worse than my side. Your people want to silence Rush and conservative talk radio and Fox News because your side, with all the rest of the networks plus your talk radio wannabes, can't compete. And you talk about swiftboating Kerry (how many houses did HE and his rich wife have?) but say nothing about the lies and distortions from moveon.org. It was moveon.org that prompted a response from swiftboat in the first place. You lefties need to quit whining and just stick with presenting your side. What happened at Abu Ghraib, embarrassing them by making them get naked, scaring them with dogs, etc. doesn't quite compare to having ones head cut of on worldwide TV or internet. "

" This constant inaction, and inept reaction, will do one more thing. Chicago is in the running for the 2016 olympics. With the state as a whole in the toilet, there could be no possible way they can get picked to host the world. Events were to be held and hotels filled to capacity, as far south as Champaign, if not further.

Two terms of tantrums, will cost this state revenue for at least twice that long now.

The field of opposing candidates was weak, is why he got a take two. A cardboard cutout write in, would have been more effective than what we got, either term. This is what happens, when party defines the vote, rather than substance of the candidate. The parties know the buttons to push to cause many to ignore commonsense, forget the last three years, and vote for a parties platform.

The whole state government is tied to this mess. If they did their job, Commutor Gov, would be limited in the mess he could make of things.

Surprized a luxury bullet train from Chicago to Springfield, hasn't started construction. Two terms of this goofs expenses, pay, perks, and wink "contributions" could have paid for one twice I would think. Ground his plane, and lend him an old propane city bus, or just pink slip him, and be done with it. It has been an issue, since first elected, and nothing but talk on it has come of it, like most needed action in all of state government. "

On the person who was glad they never voted for him, I commend you; I voted for him twice mainly on the facts that both of his oppnonents had strong ties to Georgie Ryan(remember Jim Ryan strongly emphasizing his first name?). You could say I'm partly to blame for helping him get elected twice. The choices weren't there.

"Turbin Durbin"? While he isn't one of my favorites, may I point out that he is doing everything possible to keep Futuregen alive.

I did some number crunching. If Blaggie would stay in Springfield and go to Chicago on the weekends it would save the taxpayers $1.6 million a year. Of course, if we get rid of him, it would save us a bunch of money. "
