First Coles property tax payment due Friday

9:25 a.m. CHARLESTON — The first payment for Coles County property tax bills is due Friday.

The bills were mailed to property owners about a month ago, and Friday is the last day to pay the first installment without a penalty being added to the amount owed.

The Coles County Treasurer’s Office set the deadline for the second payment installment as Sept. 29. Payments on the bills are always due in two installments, unless the entire amount is paid at once.

There are several ways to pay the bills in addition to bringing the payments to the treasurer's office at the courthouse. Payments can also be made at most banks in the county, and there are drop-off payment boxes on the south side of the courthouse in Charleston and at city hall in Mattoon.

Instructions printed on the bills will tell property owners how they can pay by credit card on the phone or online. Also, for the first time, credit card payments can be made at the treasurer's office; Mastercard and Discover cards can be used.
