COLUMN: A Central Illinois Republican goes to Denver

It was March 8, 1971, and the world anticipated the “Fight of the Century.”

Heavyweight champion Joe Frazier was being challenged by Muhammad Ali at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Only 20,000 souls would witness the fight, first hand. Another 300 million would watch world-wide.

Tickets were so scarce that even the famed singer-actor (and rumored mob friend) Frank Sinatra couldn’t score a ticket. When rumored mob connections aren’t enough, you know it’s a tough ticket.

Multiple hit records and an Academy Award could not get ol’ Blue Eyes a seat. But behind those steely orbs lurked a true genius. As the opening bell rang for what would be a 15-round bout, there sitting at the ropes was none other than ... Frank Sinatra.

He sat ringside as the credentialed photographer for Time-Life magazine.

Early this spring, the Democratic Convention held promise as a replay of the Frazier-Ali matchup as Hillary and Barack battled for the nomination. It’s been decades since a nominee, from either political party, was decided at the convention.

Just as Sinatra was a huge sports fan, I’m a fan of politics. I love the history and character of the presidential election process that is so uniquely American. And so I desperately wanted a ring-side seat to the history of the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

But, I’m an avowed Republican.

So, taking a page from crooner Frank, I conceived the idea of attending the convention as a credentialed reporter. But not just any type of reporter.

Just as Sinatra delivered a view of the ’71 fight through his lens, I wanted to provide a perspective of the convention through the prism of my life as Republican and small-business owner.

And so it was, in the early days of spring, that I called Carl Walworth, publisher of the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier. Carl and I had gotten to know each other through Catholic Charities several years prior.

As the chairman of the 28-County Diocesan Board for Catholic Charities, I had witnessed first hand as Carl and other community leaders created the vibrant entity that is the Coles, Douglas and Edgar County Catholic Charities organization.

Thankfully, Carl loved the idea of me reporting as an identified Republican. We submitted my credential application in early April and waited ... and waited ... and waited. It wasn’t until the last day of July that we finally received word that the credentials had been approved!

Some are concerned that my presence in Denver might be disruptive. (My wife isn’t sure if I should take bail money or funds for medical care.) At the end of the day this is the Democrats’ party. It’s also a celebration of the greatest traditions of democracy.

Toward that end, I don’t intend to change anyone’s political philosophy with my reporting. I simply want to offer a unique perspective of history, while scoring a ringside seat.

I’m deeply grateful to Carl and his team for participating in this unique adventure. I just wish he would stop reminding me that I’m no Frank Sinatra.

" Now don't forget the following ideas, Bob. (1) never talk about how good McCain will be for the country, only focus on how bad Obama would be (2) ignore any and all indiscressions on the part of McCain, but bring any misstep you can come with on Obama (3) never, ever mention Cindy McCain's past problems, especially the drug addiction, adultery and theft incidents, but bring up any thing you can come up with on Michelle Obama, and be sure to omit the word really when you remind us of her famous line about being proud of her country. (4) continue to mention Tony Rezko every other breath, but don't mention that he also raised millions for George Bush, and if asked about that, do the same thing that all good Republicans do, come down with a serious case of amnesia. (5) continue to claim Obama is a closet Muslim, but don't bring up McCain's connection the any nutty hate mongering preachers such as Parsley or Hagee. (6) continue to remind us of any flip flops you can come up with on Obama, but never mention any from the even longer list of McCain's changes on various positions, such as his recent conversion on his long standing position against off shore drilling. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Do all of the above and you will do your party proud, who knows you might even get an occasional gig on the Faux news channel.... LOL! "

" Early Bird, I've said this before about others. I would not want to be friend or family as you seem to be a very unforgiving person who obviously has never made a serious mistake in your life. Cindy McCain made a very serious mistake; she had a drug addiction which led to a host of other bad deeds. She has recovered as many people do and moved on with her life spending much of it doing good deeds all over the world. Her youngest child is one of those she has rescued. Evidently this means nothing as it's all about past deeds. If that is the case, then I think you might have a problem with a man who let a woman drown hailed as a hero at this convention. That all said, I'm looking forward to Mr. Scultz's posts from the convention and I hope the paper sends a Democrat to the Republican convention. Unlike some others, I think I can handle that. "

Bush took this nation to war based on lies, invaded a country that posed no threat and killed hundreds of thousands of its people. I'd say a single drowning pretty much pales by comparison, wouldn't you, Miltdew? "

" What? You defended her drug theft. OK, now how about the adulterous affair, gonna downplay that one too?. Just good old Republican family values, right miltie? And it sure doesn't sound like you've found it in your heart to forgive old Teddy either. I have a feeling your willingness to forgive runs along part lines. LOL! "

" TQ, Republicrits like miltie are more upset over Clinton's bj in the White house than they are over the thousands of Americans who gave their lives for a pack of lies and the trillions of dollars that our grandchildren will have to pay for the Bush/Cheney invasion and long occupation of Iraq.

And I guess miltie hasn't heard the story of Laura Bush taking the life of another with her reckless driving habits. But what the heck, she's a rich Republican and laws don't apply to them. "

" Written by Dr. Jack Wheeler

The O-man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the world works, no [guts], nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of real substance.

He has no real identity. He is half-white, which he rejects. The rest of him is mostly Arab, which he hides but is disclosed by his non-African Arabic surname and his Arabic first and middle names as a way to triply proclaim his Arabic parentage to people in Kenya . Only a small part of him is African Black from his Luo grandmother, which he pretends he is exclusively.

What he isn't, not a genetic drop of, is 'African-American,' the descendant of enslaved Africans brought to America chained in slave ships. He hasn't a single ancestor who was a slave. Instead, his Arab ancestors were slave owners. Slave-trading was the main Arab business in East Africa for centuries until the British ended it.

Let that sink in: Obama is not the descendant of slaves, he is the descendant of slave owners Thus he makes the perfect Liberal Messiah.

It's something Hillary doesn't understand - how some complete neophyte came out of the blue and stole the Dem nomination from her. Obamamania is beyond politics and reason. It is a true religious cult, whose adherents reject Christianity yet still believe in Original Sin, transferring it from the evil of being human to the evil of being white.

Thus Obama has become the white liberals' Christ, offering absolution from the Sin of Being White. There is no reason or logic behind it, no faults or flaws of his can diminish it, no arguments Hillary could make of any kind can be effective against it. The absurdity of Hypocrisy Clothed In Human Flesh being their Savior is all the more cause for liberals to worship him: Credo quia absurdum, I believe it because it is absurd.

Thank heavens that the voting majority of Americans remain Christian and are in no desperate need of a phony savior.

His candidacy is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously by any thinking American "

" Off the Net:

It's not too early to start thinking about why McCain would be an awful president:

He is even more wrong about Iraq than the Bush administration, if that's possible. He thinks that because our troop escalation has coincided with a reduction in violence (down to levels that were considered catastrophic a few years ago, but now seem better by comparison), that somehow means that our presence is solving long term issues like power sharing between Shia and Sunni.

OK, McCain is really smoking crack about Iraq. So much so that it deserves another bullet point. Remember that time McCain walked through the Baghdad marketplace, guarded by massive amounts of firepower and wearing a bulletproof vest, and then commented how one could "walk freely" in some parts of Baghdad? That is the level of reality denial he has about the situation. It's really scary.

McCain took a good Beach Boys song and turned it into a joke about bombing Iran. The moral callousness of that aside, what does he think bombing Iran would actually accomplish? Wouldn't it just make them more determined to acquire nuclear weapons, and justify all the "Great Satan" rhetoric that the theocrats in that country use to justify their stranglehold on power? Is there any realistic scenario in which the strategic position of the United States would be better after a bombing Iran?

McCain doesn't support a woman's right to control her own body.
McCain gets endorsements from complete wingnut freakazoids like John Hagee (who thinks God deliberately killed all those people in New Orleans with a hurricane because of a gay pride parade). And McCain states that he's "very proud to have pastor Hagee's support." (Greenwald asks the relevant question: Why do blacks always have to distance themselves from the likes of Farrakhan, but whites can get support from the most batpoop-crazy wackjobs and not suffer any credibility hits for it?)
He's a Republican. He kisses Bush's rear. He might make some noise about dissenting so he can give the press an excuse to keep up with their mindless narrative of how independent he is. But in the end he knuckles under. Electing McCain would empower Republicans to continue all the hideous policies they've been foisting on us.

Even on the issue of torture, which given McCain's horrific experiences as a POW you'd think he'd never waver on, when push comes to shove he won't vote for banning it completely.

McCain caved to the xenophobic right-wingers on the issue of immigration reform. (Not that the corporatist Republican version was great, but it was better than the nativist Republican version.)

McCain voted against SCHIP re-authorization. Indeed the Children's Defense Fund Action Council gave him the worst rating of all Senators.
McCain's got a really bad temper.

That's just a few to get started. There will no doubt be more. McCain has a lot of undeserved positive media. Don't get sucked in. And his campaign and the Republican party are going to fling a lot of nasty mud at the Democratic nominee, whoever it turns out to be. We can't let the Republican nominee sail by on his favorable media coverage. McCain would be an awful president, and should be kept FAR AWAY from the White House. "

"[McCain] is even more wrong about Iraq than the Bush administration"

Obama was categorically against the invasion until his buddy Tony Rezko planned to build a $150 million Chamchamal Power Plant in Kurdish Iraq. Then he was all about making sure Iraq was stable. However, shortly after the deal fell through, he declared the war "unwinnable" and called for immediate troop withdrawal.

"McCain took a good Beach Boys song and turned it into a joke about bombing Iran."

You are really reaching, but I heard that same song in 1979 during the hostage crisis.

"McCain doesn't support a woman's right to control her own body."

who supports the baby's rights? I thought Obama was a Christian?

"McCain gets endorsements from complete wingnut freakazoids like John Hagee"

How about James Cone, the mentor to Obama's minister..."Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. . . . Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love"

"Electing McCain would empower Republicans to continue all the hideous policies they've been foisting on us."

Aren't the Democrats in control of congress?

"Even on the issue of torture, which given McCain's horrific experiences as a POW you'd think he'd never waver on, when push comes to shove he won't vote for banning it completely."

Maybe you need to watch some more Al-Qaeda videos.

"McCain caved to the xenophobic right-wingers on the issue of immigration reform."

If you are in favor of illegals, how about keeping them at your house. "

" Not sure the lone biased reporting, is true. Objective reporting is undoubtedly somewhat represented. This is a big and widly covered event. Some would say any of the non card carrying donkey brandishing people covering the convention would have to be of biased origins.

The blog and last report, give a more objective unbiased and welcome view of the events. Objectivity is supposed to be the foundation of most reporting, with the biased ideas and persuit of facts or lack of it, reserved for the opinion pages where opinions belong. Objectively persuing facts, vs ignoring them, is also a ground breaking event for this publication lately. A representative of of the JG/TC comming across as honest and objective, is a welcome breath of fresh air. One can have opposing views, and still see things for what they are, without placing it in the spun for a headline publication blender. Seems those ideas are antiquated or dismissed by most, but good to see, not by all.

If they had it set up to cover both conventions by, as objective members of both parties, with both giving their individual take on how they compare, and how each unfolded, would be the only thing I would add to what was a good idea, by this now Reporter.

I now retract the Elizabeth Hasselbec from The View comment. Not all avowed political party members are that jaded, or at least they don't all come across as such. "
