Some history noted, some ignored
By BOB SCHULTZ, For the JG/T-C
DENVER — Okay, I have an admission to make. Writing a column for the Mattoon Journal Gazette and Charleston Times-Courier on the 2008 Democratic National Convention is difficult. And here’s the problem. The JG/T-C are morning papers. The hard-driving publisher and editor have given me a daily deadline of 9 p.m. (CST) for the submission of my work.
At the opening night of the convention, Michelle Obama didn’t take the stage until 9:30 p.m. (CST). Hence, I had to write about an event that had yet to occur. Sadly, if Michelle had shouted out, “I love Carl Walworth and the JG/T-C,” it would not have made my column.
As a result, I won’t attempt to offer last-minute scoops (or guesses). Rather, I submit my observations of events that I’ve seen.
Walking into the Denver Pepsi Center early on Monday afternoon, I was intrigued by the seating of the state delegations. In particular, the states with the most coveted spots were Michigan and Florida. These two states created more havoc in the Democratic primary process because of their decision to disregard party rules and hold early primaries. Because of Michigan and Florida’s independence, the DNC refused to certify their elected delegates. Until now.
Just before the start of this convention, the DNC announced the delegates would be seated and their delegates counted. And seated they were — front and center.
I wonder how Oregon felt? The state of Oregon, who had obeyed all DNC rules, was rewarded with seats at the back of the convention hall. In fact, Oregon sat behind the delegation from Puerto Rico. The seating decision sends an interesting message for those states considering going against DNC rules in 2012.

The Monday night activities also included tributes to the Kennedy family and Jimmy Carter. It was a celebration of these two previous Democratic presidencies. Ironically, Barack Obama’s platform is really about expanding the role of government. His closest presidential soul mate would then certainly have to be Lyndon Johnson. But Johnson’s image and memory was no where to be found in the hall. Presumably, the tribute to the Clinton presidency will precede Bill Clinton’s speech tonight.

The news reports of protests at this convention are wildly overblown. While we landed smack in the middle of a large protest on our arrival in Denver on Sunday, we’ve seen little since then. In fact, the protestors are confined to an area that few if any delegates will ever see.

At the end of the day, this election is unique in that neither party has nominated a traditional candidate. One is a relative newcomer, the other a maverick. As a result, the focus of this election will properly shift to the issues and the positions held by the candidates. Thank God.
