Some history noted, some ignored

DENVER — Okay, I have an admission to make. Writing a column for the Mattoon Journal Gazette and Charleston Times-Courier on the 2008 Democratic National Convention is difficult. And here’s the problem. The JG/T-C are morning papers. The hard-driving publisher and editor have given me a daily deadline of 9 p.m. (CST) for the submission of my work.

At the opening night of the convention, Michelle Obama didn’t take the stage until 9:30 p.m. (CST). Hence, I had to write about an event that had yet to occur. Sadly, if Michelle had shouted out, “I love Carl Walworth and the JG/T-C,” it would not have made my column.

As a result, I won’t attempt to offer last-minute scoops (or guesses). Rather, I submit my observations of events that I’ve seen.

Walking into the Denver Pepsi Center early on Monday afternoon, I was intrigued by the seating of the state delegations. In particular, the states with the most coveted spots were Michigan and Florida. These two states created more havoc in the Democratic primary process because of their decision to disregard party rules and hold early primaries. Because of Michigan and Florida’s independence, the DNC refused to certify their elected delegates. Until now.

Just before the start of this convention, the DNC announced the delegates would be seated and their delegates counted. And seated they were — front and center.

I wonder how Oregon felt? The state of Oregon, who had obeyed all DNC rules, was rewarded with seats at the back of the convention hall. In fact, Oregon sat behind the delegation from Puerto Rico. The seating decision sends an interesting message for those states considering going against DNC rules in 2012.

The Monday night activities also included tributes to the Kennedy family and Jimmy Carter. It was a celebration of these two previous Democratic presidencies. Ironically, Barack Obama’s platform is really about expanding the role of government. His closest presidential soul mate would then certainly have to be Lyndon Johnson. But Johnson’s image and memory was no where to be found in the hall. Presumably, the tribute to the Clinton presidency will precede Bill Clinton’s speech tonight.

— — —

The news reports of protests at this convention are wildly overblown. While we landed smack in the middle of a large protest on our arrival in Denver on Sunday, we’ve seen little since then. In fact, the protestors are confined to an area that few if any delegates will ever see.

— — —

At the end of the day, this election is unique in that neither party has nominated a traditional candidate. One is a relative newcomer, the other a maverick. As a result, the focus of this election will properly shift to the issues and the positions held by the candidates. Thank God.

Bob Schultz is an East Central Illinois businessman, investor and political enthusiast. Although he identifies as a Republican, he is attending the Democratic National Convention to bring JG/T-C readers a local perspective.

" Does this mean that the article in today's paper was written before the speech? Though it includes past tense verbs ("offered a necessary softening," "was introduced")?

You are so busted, JG-TC. "

The Question wrote on Aug 27, 2008 6:45 AM:

" Well, Bob, if you find writing a daily front-page article of Republican propaganda too difficult, why don't you stop doing it? We won't mind. "

miltmart wrote on Aug 27, 2008 9:10 AM:

" I am finding this highly amusing. Those on the left are so enraged that this paper would actually send a REPUBLICAN to the Democrat convention that they are trying to make ridiculous points. Mr. Schultz admits that the article was written before the speech. I hope you all are as disturbed by what he wrote on the blog about the reporters in press row standing and cheering Michelle Obama's speech. This is the supposedly unbiased press some of you are all so sure we have and you're all worried about one guy from central Illinois and what he'll tell us. Think about it. "

" Hey JG-TC, will you send me to St. Paul next week? I'd love to do an observation of the Republican convention for the fine readers of central Illinois everyday. "

" Definately a better piece.

Florida and Michigan, might have made or influenced just enough difference at an earlier time that this convention was a Clinton ball instead. Frankly after the hanging chad, I would have cut florida loose, and let them bob around with the other island republics. Perhaps the fence funding can be stretched a little farther, and we can put them on the other side of it, change their currency to the peso, and let them thnk about it for 8 years plus how ever long it takes to get out of this mess.

Maverick more likely denotes the tom cruise likeness. A little man. Has been in the business controversially for a long time. Was portrayed as a pilot. Likely to jump on couches, hoot and holler, and run around in his boxers. That is if doctors hadn't warned him against it, for fear of breaking a hip. Doesn't fit the western vesion of the term any better, I think maverick might be a name McCain should drop as in loose, not the way he tends to. Kinda like that clark rockeffeller guy. That might be McCains VP pick, now I spoiled it. Darn "

Mike P wrote on Aug 27, 2008 11:19 AM:

" Perhaps people spending an eternity in a notoriously hot place, need to be ready to don their parkas.

An avowed Political party member, staffed by the local paper, be it short term or not, with ties to local business, has told the truth. Done it without long drawn out denial attached to it, no prolonged smoke and mirrors, or manipulating marionette puppet show boards. My hat is off. More of the same, has been long needed, in a broad area.

A long journey begins with the first few steps. None on the way are insignificant, but the direction each are taken in, can have a great impact on the end destination. "

" Ya gotta love how old miltie bemoans the bias on the left. Hilarious! Of course being open minded as she is, miltie never shows any bias, or is able to see any from the right wing regulars on here such as Doh, who last posted as RushBaby. No bias there, huh miltie....

I love reading miltie's posts, she never fails to make me chuckle....LOL!

I think I'm beginning to see why the Reich wingers aren't able to pick up on the slant of the Faux news channel. If they're all this dumb...well you know... "

You can't expect them to remember that Miltmart. Since it was so long ago that he explained he had a 9:pm deadline issued by the paper. "

" When I first saw the headline on Fox online about someone getting three DUI's I naturally assumed they were talking about George Bush. No, they were talking about some Pennsylvania college professor. Wondering why this would warrant a lead, I read further into the article and I came upon the real reason, this guy had worked in the Clinton administration. LOL!

Good old fair and balanced Fox news....

They always do their job in keeping us informed about the misdeeds of any Democrat, from dog catcher in Gary Indiana to John Edwards on the national scene. "
