LETTER: Master Gardeners do work that 'will take your breath away' at SBLHC
By SHIRLEY RIDEOUT, Kansas
As some of you know, I’m very interested in flowers and have a deep love for them.
I have been taking exercises at Sarah Bush — two days a week. I was told I could park in the METS area. If they had said, find the flower bed, I’d have parked right away.
The gardens are planted and cared for by Master Gardeners. You’ll find them working early in the morning, in order to beat the heat. The gardens are always changing, with new blooms each week. They consist of rock gardens, the children’s garden, herb garden, bog garden and cottage garden.
The cottage garden contains annual and perennial flowers and vines such as old fashioned lilies, black-eyed susan, baby’s breath, balloon flower, iris, blanket flower, butterfly bush, coneflower, daisy garden, phlox, hollyhock, peony, russian sage — all colors of yarrow.
I saw a beautiful iris in shades of blue with a double head bloom — just fabulous.
As the name suggests, a BOG garden needs lots of watery conditions. These plants consist of black elephant ear, water plantain, pitcher plant and Egyptian papyrus.
Herb garden — we find many plants used for medicine. The early settlers used digital for heart and echinacea for the immune system against colds and flus. I was impressed with the stevia plant. I put a leaf in my mouth and had a very sweet taste, a sub for sugar. I bought one at the farmers market.
I admired the lovely stone basket with iron around in a circle to resemble a globe. Flowers are inside with trailing vines and nasturines around the base. The children’s garden — I studied intently and was amazed by the miniature houses, a garden shed with tools and an old barn, miniature dog and cats laying in the windows. A wall of rocks with a bench and dog by a pond made of marbles in colors of blue with desert type flowers in bloom. A small cactus — taller green plants to resemble trees and parsley in the yard. Another very small plant; very intricate in color and shape called the yubi rose.
On the other side is Jack and the beanstalk. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are in the garden.
If you get to Sarah Bush, take a few minutes and see the wonders the Master Gardeners have created. I did and I’m excited. They will take your breath away.
