Lake Land College's Navigator wins big at conference



CHICAGO — The staff of Lake Land College’s Navigator recently won five awards at the Spring 2008 Illinois Community College Journalism Association conference held at Harold Washington College, Chicago. Lake Land competed against nine schools in 15 categories.

The Navigator is Lake Land College’s student newspaper and is produced by the students for the students every month during the fall and spring semesters.

The eight- to 12-page tabloid combines news, features, sports, entertainment and information about upcoming events on campus.

The 2007-2008 staff of the Navigator is Managing Editor Ciara Shook; News and Opinion Editor Jessie White; Sports and Entertainment Editor Leah Marlow; Campus and Features Editor Jenny Keefe; Photo/Web Editor Chris Kepley; Copy Editor/Writer Lauren Spaniol; and Business Manager Scott May.

Shook took second and third place in the advertising and design category. Kepley won third place in the sports photo category. Shook and Kepley tied for second in the photo spread category.

The staff also had the opportunity to attend education sessions taught by seasoned journalism faculty, current journalists and graphic designers, as well as spend time with a Pulitzer Prize winner from the Chicago Tribune.
