LETTER: 'Provocative letter' made people think

The provocative letter I wrote a few days ago (July 24) regarding the difference in thinking between many blacks and whites on various issues elicited a number of responses. At least it made people think.

As I stated in that letter, Barrack Obama is so far to the left that I could not vote for him. By the same token, due to his stance on a number of issues, McCain was not, and is not now, high on my list of potential presidential candidates either.

By Mr. Allison’s definition, any white person who fails to embrace and vote for an Obama presidency could be classified as a white racist. Of course, the members of the Democratic Black Caucus in Washington could never be called racists? Nor should Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and certain other black politicians ever be viewed as racists. Or so the biased media would have us believe.

If some of us white voters have reservations about where the country might be led by an elitist black politician who swiftly arose from the corrupt environment of Chicago politics, and Illinois politics in general, I would suggest that we have a lot of company. While the term “racist” does not fit well with us, I think our being very apprehensive, extremely cautious, and willing to thoroughly examine the track records of all those whom we vote for is well justified.

" I am amused by people like Jack Pierce who insist on calling Obama an elitist. Those who do so have not bothered to look at his background. Perhaps this is because they tried to pin the label of radical Muslim on him, and that idea fell through. I really think the reason they use this term, in addition to the obvious attempt to put him down, is that the man is articulate and can actually complete a sentence without butchering the English language.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a president who didn't embarrass us every time he opened his mouth. "

Not really Jack. It made a lot of people speak out against your racist tirade, and that doesn't require a lot of thinking. Even those bigots who agree with you, like Tom A and miltmart, lacked the intestinal fortitude to post their true feelings, although both of them did show support in an indirect, and subtle way. "

I think that the reasons republicans want McCain is because he won't make Bush look so bad and will help resurect/preserve what little legacy Bush has. Obama on the otherhand, a highly intelligent, thoughtful, president with a wider world understanding and view will make Bush look extremely bad. "

" Cautious is one thing but sorry jack your last letter was demeaning, and no everyone who doesn't vote for Obama isn't racist, my letter might have made it look that way by saying i'm voting for him because he understands our white presidents sucked but what i meant was he actually realizes our problems and doesn't pretend we are super fine. " Steven D. We know for a fact that Adkisson, the Unitarian church shooter, wrote a specific hate filled manifesto detailing his reasons for targeting the most prominent "liberal" church in Knoxville for his massacre.
I don't think it is a coincidence that within a few weeks, another disturbed individual who had lost his job (at least by his own perception -- Target is denying they terminated him), chose to shoot someone associated with "liberals" and "Democrats." The right wing bloggers and talk show hosts can deny their complicity in these "random" actions, and, indeed, legally they are not responsible for the criminal actions of a few "rogue" individuals. However, their writings and commentary, widely disseminated has spread a culture where violence against liberals, Democrats, feminists, gays, blacks, immigrants, Muslims and any other out group is frequently expressed as "comedy" or in fantasies of wish fulfillment. They can claim all they like that they cannot be held accountable for the aura of hatred they have engendered in American society, but their protestations ring hollow.
People too young to have lived through the Civil Rights era might not remember that much of the same hate speech was prominent among conservative, racist and nativist circles. The result was a wave of violent attacks on prominent liberals and activists, and I am not just referring to the Kennedy brothers and Dr King. A whole host of people were murdered by those who felt entitled to take the lives of those who threatened their political ideology. The bombings in Birmingham, church burnings, Medgar Evers assassination and many other acts of violence. "

And for all of Jacks supporters, that was a pretty lame attempt by Jack to claim his motivation was anything other than what it really was; the racist rantings of a bitter and angry old man. "

" "If some of us white voters have reservations about where the country might be led by an elitist black politician who swiftly arose from the corrupt environment of Chicago politics..."

Yeah, but see Jack, you never mentioned the corrupt environment of Chicago politics in your letter. You never even stressed that Obama was elitist. You simply compared Obama to African leaders -- hoping to draw a comparison between their corruption, not Chicago corruption or Obama's elitism, and Obama himself. The only connection between Obama and African leaders is the tint of their skin not being ivory-white like yours or mine -- Obama is completely detatched from the experiences that created African despotisms.

"I think our being very apprehensive, extremely cautious, and willing to thoroughly examine the track records of all those whom we vote for is well justified."

Well, you didn't thoroughly examine Obama's track record; you compared an Obama presidency to African dictorships, again, based on the color of their skin (because you failed to connect Obama and African despots in any meaningful way because intelligent, non-racist people cannot connect the two because the African-American 20th century experience and the African 20th century experience were so radically different.)

"...any white person who fails to embrace and vote for an Obama presidency could be classified as a white racist."

No, only those who use broad, sweeping assumptions like all black people make bad decisions because some/many black people feel differently about the OJ verdict than some/many white people, or those who believe that black people are unable to think like white people, or vice-versa, are classified as racist. "

" The following is a partial transcript of George's weekly radio address:

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. For more than 7 years, the people of the nation of Iraq have withstood assault from the United States military. The world has watched with alarm as the United States invaded a sovereign state and threatened a government that not too long ago we supported, and in fact provided military arms to, including the mustard gas that I was so upset about when the leader of Iraq used it against the Kurds. This is completely unacceptable to the free nations of the world.

I didn't have to change many words to show the absurdity of Bush's speech.

Invading other nations appears to be a privilege Bush/Cheney reserve for themselves.

And no, before you right wingers get your panties in a bunch, I don't condone what the Russians did either.

Both Putin and Bush were wrong in their actions....

For a continuation of the Bush/Cheney style of foreign relations and diplomacy, vote for McCain. "

My first, second and third reading of Mr. Pierce's letter left me with the very distinct impression that whether or not he *intended* it to be a racist rant, it surely read like one. "

" There's a lot of chatter on the Net about Colin Powell. There's some speculation about him endorsing Obama. Some are are saying it's just a racial thing. Personally I think it's because Powell sees in McCain four more years of the same failed policies of the current administration. After being duped by the Bush regime, who can blame him if it's only getting back.

Colin Powell represents the type decency, honor, and character that people look for in military leaders and is is reminiscent of Dwight Eisenhower, which is just the opposite of the dark, scheming and self promoting type of military leader, Alexander Haig. His endorsement would help Obama tremendously.

I don't think it will happen, but I can just imagine the reaction of people like our friend Jack, if Obama were to pick Powell for VP. "

" To continue...

The Republicans are trying to use the low approval ratings of Democrats in Congress, gay issues and abortion for political gain again this election cycle.

I think its important to remind folks that having a majority of ONE with at least one Independent spying on the Dems plans (Lieberman), with a Republican president who promises to veto any bill he doesnt like - makes it extremely difficult to solve ANY problem.

I could also remind you that Democrats continue to have a much better approval rating in Congress then do the Republicans currently serving there.

As for using the abortion and gay rights argument (hes pro-choice or a baby killer and marriage is between a man and a woman), Republicans had the majority in congress for 12 years, they had a conservative supreme court during those years and a well liked Republican president for at least 10 of those years what was their problem? Why didnt they kill the Roe vs Wade law? Why didnt they pass a constitutional amendment making it a law that marriage is between a man and a woman?

Its simple folks. If they killed those laws theyd have no platform to run on in the next election cycle.

" McCain's foreign 'policy' problem
by smintheus
Sun Aug 17, 2008 at 12:38:40 PM PDT
John McCain's foreign 'policy' problem is that he doesn't really have a policy. What he has are several tics, or gut reactions, that keep getting played out on the world stage. When you look at the sum of what he advocates, it amounts to a vague, incoherent, contradictory, self-defeating mish mash of reactions against things McCain doesn't like. Almost entirely negative, his foreign 'policy' offers very little that is forward looking. At best, he identifies a few things he doesn't want to see happen. It's not surprising that somebody who tries to build 'policy' on a crumbly foundation of gut reactions - very much as George Bush himself - comes across frequently as rash. A McCain presidency would be dangerous not just because he shoots from the hip, but because that's a symptom of a deeper problem: He has no clear idea what he wants to achieve. He has no method, no meaningful goal, and thus no path to get there.

A coherent foreign policy doesn't necessarily require elaboration in lengthy tracts aimed toward policy wonks. It just requires coherence...that is, it needs to be backed up by thought until national interests, goals, and methods are brought into line. Typically, you can tell that thinking is clear when it can be summarized. So for example this is the core of a coherent foreign policy. "

" Burglar flees in boxers, with jeans left in washer

WICHITA, Kan. A Kansas burglar apparently likes to be clean but isn't so good about clean getaways.

Police in Wichita said it appears a man broke into a house Friday night to wash his clothes but fled in boxers, with his jeans still in the washer.

Here's what happened: A woman reported that she returned home, found her basement laundry room in disarray and went upstairs to call her husband.

That's when a man wearing only blue boxer shorts came upstairs, grabbed her purse and ran out the door.

Police Sgt. Diane Varnell said the woman chased him and recovered her purse, but the burglar is still on the loose.

Varnell said it appears the man simply needed to wash his clothes. "

" The REPUBLICAN congressional years 1994 - 2006 (and 2000-2008 President Bush years) will be remembered for all theyve accomplished

Seven year war in Afghanistan, 5 year war in Iraq with close to 660 billion dollars spent, part of which we now owe China to pay for them.

North Korea, Iran and now Russia, are all greater powers then before the GOP took control of government. Pakistan with nukes is about to lose their (U.S. picked) leader. China is now listed as having the most manufacturing companies in the world.

Our food and toys are either poisoned or lead filled.

Were told that even though our attorney generals office committed crimes by picking justices by looking at their political views, they wont be charged with a crime because, Not every wrong, or even every violation of the law, is a crime, says Attorney General Michael.

Our privacy has forever been invaded.
Abortion (Roe vs Wade) is still legal even though President Bush had control of Congress and a conservative Supreme Court.

A CIA operatives name was leaked to the media by Bushs right hand men - with his and Cheneys permission yet after promising to fire anyone that leaked the info, those persons remain free.

Its now been proven that Americans were manipulated into going to war with a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.

Well remember the famous Abu Ghraib abuse photos and that we didnt torture prisoners, then later were told, we didbut only three times.

New Orleans victims are still waiting for -safe- housing from Fema after the Katrina hurricane.

The new Homeland Defense dept is now building its on central intelligence office outside of CIA.

President Bush has written over 200 special executive orders, overriding bills hes signed into law so that he can avoid obeying those new laws.

Weve had the worst housing crisis in Americas history. Millions of jobs are lost and the country is in a recession. The rich got richer while middle class was forgotten. Oil companies made record breaking profits. Gas prices more than tripled and natural gas prices shoot up sky high.

Last but not least, well always remember being attacked by terrorists on 9/11 (Bush had been in charge for 8 months intelligence was warning his administration for at least 3 and a half of those months - of imminent danger) and when told, how our president took 7 minutes to finally get up and attend to the business of our nation instead of sitting in a class room full of children telling stories. Well remember finding out later that the Bush administration was warned in Augusts NIE about people planning to use planes hit buildings with and that Osama Bin Laden was aiming to attack the U.S President Bush just sat at his Texas ranch on vacation and did nothing about it.

President Bush says the terrorists hate Americans because of FREEDOM.

Osama Bin Laden is still FREE Somehow I doubt he hates freedom.

Memories.

The Straight Talk Express bus driving away and in the background McCain(from his sketch on SNL) is singing

"Memories, light the corners of my mind, Misty water-colored memories, of the way we were." "
