Board approves new food vendor at Laker Pointe

MATTOON — The Lake Land College Board of Trustees approved two vendor contracts Monday for offering a sweeter deal to consumers and the college.

J & J Ventures will provide self-serve vending kiosks at Laker Point in the Student Services Building. The vending company will offer a variety of food options to college students and employees, day and night.

The board, which approved the contract unanimously Monday night, learned the new pact increases the commission amount from 5 percent with a past vendor to 12.5 percent with J J Ventures of Effingham. It was noted the past vendor also provided an annual scholarship to the college. In addition, students will have a debit or Smart card payment option on the machines.

The college board also approved a 10-year agreement with Pepsi MidAmerica of Marion for soft drink vending at Lake Land. The deal with Pepsi MidAmerica involves $15,000 going to the college and an electronic message board project. Students will also have a chance to try out debit and Smart card payments on some of the machines on campus.

The Subway venue will remain at Laker Point, while the vending machines will take over the space vacated by Common Grounds at the end of the spring semester.

These vending contracts were recommended with input from student leaders on campus. Student surveys showed students want more variety on their selections and different payment options.

“That is why we go to the students — because we don’t always know what they want,” said board Chairwoman Doris Reynolds.

Also Monday, students seeking easier transfer options to Eastern Illinois University can benefit from additional courses included in the 2plus2 transfer agreements with the university. The transfer option is open to associate degree holders in accounting, administrative assistants in executive, legal or medical specialities, desktop publishing graphic design, information technology with concentrations in computer applications, network administration, programming or Web technology and degrees in management, marketing and office management.

College officials said the high rate of transfers to Eastern justifies the need for smoother transitions for Lake Land graduates.

The board also approved a $25,041 contract with Wilkins-Lowe & Co. or for legal liability insurance for directors or managers or college trustees and foundation boards. This amounts to a $1,200 decrease in the premium amount, but the deductible is increasing from $5,000 to $50,000 due to the liability experience of the college district.

Vice President of Business Services Ray Rieck cited Department of Corrections claims as part of the “gotcha” factor on the liability deductible increase.

In other business, the board approved Tom Niebrugge as vice chairman of the board to replace Kent Metzger, who submitted his resignation last month for personal and business reasons. Niebrugge abstained, while Reynolds and trustees Jim Shaffer, Leland Glazebrook, Mike Sullivan and Marianne Morgan cast votes for the lone candidate nominated.

Shaffer was also appointed as chairman of the buildings and site committee. Reynolds said a new board member will be appointed in the near future.

The board also celebrated its 500th regular meeting with words of praise for the “visionary” talents of the founders of the college. Bob Webb, second president of the college, talked about the first meeting in November 1966.

“They were visionaries,” Webb said. “But they probably had no idea what would happen to the college in the ensuing years.”

Reynolds congratulated past and current students, staff and board members for their work to make Lake Land a success over the years.
