Lake Land board to set milestone with 500th meeting Monday

MATTOON — The Lake Land College Board of Trustees will set a record Monday night that was more than 40 years in the making.

The governing board for the college district will hold its 500th meeting. Over the years, the board has had 35 board members and 34 student trustees. Several of the current board members have had long-time service.

The college has gone from holding classes in different buildings in Mattoon to hosting educational programs at attendance centers throughout the East Central Illinois District at Effingham, Pana and Marshall as well as the permanent campus at Mattoon.

When registration began in the 1960s, the college could measure its enrollment by many dozens, but now thousands of students attend classes or log on through online classes.

Monday’s meeting starts at 6 p.m. in Room 081 of Webb Hall, named after Robert Webb, the second president of Lake Land.

The meeting on Monday will include action on a beverage vendor contract for the college and a business agreement for a new vendor at Laker Point to fill a vacancy.

Other agreements before the board include bids for printing and mail preparation for class schedules, Plus-2 transfers with Eastern Illinois University and board legal liability insurance coverage.

Regarding personnel matters, the board will consider a separation agreement with a tenured faculty member. Action will come after a closed session.

The board will also take action to fill the board vice chairman position and two committee positions with the recent resignation of Kent Metzger as a board trustee. Appointment of 2008-09 college committees is also on the agenda for Monday.

There will also be reports on the fall semester. The board meeting offers time for public comments or questions prior to entering into committee reports.
