Boroughs featured at Common Grounds

MATTOON — The artwork of Charleston resident Marcia Boroughs will be on display during August and September at Common Grounds, 1612 Charleston Ave., Mattoon.

Boroughs’ main art training was in the field of ceramics at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kan. Later, she maintained a pottery studio in her Indiana home.

Earlier art study included classes in watercolor, oil, life drawing and casein at John Herron Art Institute, Indiana University Extension and Oregon College of Education.

Since retirement she has worked mostly in watercolor, but explores the use of other media, some of which are included in this show.

Boroughs’ paintings are representational and include landscapes, florals, still lifes and portraits.

“Choosing a subject for painting may be simply that a light, shape, color, or a combination of these, has caught my attention and cried, ‘Paint me!’ she said.

“Many of my paintings are of favorite places we have visited on our many summer trips, mostly in the American West. Also, I love painting or drawing the faces of our grand- and great-grandchildren.”

Boroughs and her husband, Lowell, a retired music professor, moved to the Charleston area in 1990 to be near their sons, Dana and Brian Boroughs.

She is a member of the art guilds in Mattoon, Paris, Effingham, Sullivan and Palestine; as well as the Coles County Arts Council and Associated Artists of Central Illinois Inc.

She has won awards in local and regional shows and continues to learn through workshops when they are available in the area.

Other interests include spinning, weaving, knitting and natural dyeing.

The exhibit is sponsored by Common Grounds, the Mattoon Arts Council and West and Co.
