Lake Land College students selected to create program for 'College America'

MATTOON — Lake Land College’s broadcast writing students were recently chosen to produce a program for “College America,” a production containing the best material from participating college’s radio students.

The team created four 30-minute news packages consisting of news features and music criticism with the best material from each chosen to comprise one 30-minute “College America” program, under the direction of Ed Thomas, speech communications/broadcasting instructor.

“The students learned a great deal from the opportunity and overcame the challenges of generating a 30-minute news package,” Thomas said.

Lake Land College’s RTV program was chosen after one of Lake Land College’s RTV students, Brandon Havrilka, Sherman, submitted two stories to the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, under Thomas’ direction.

“The executive producer was so impressed she requested the Lake Land RTV students produce the program with a focus on college campus violence,” Thomas said.

The Lake Land College edition of “College America” airs on WLKL 89.9 FM, the college’s student-run station, at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Lake Land’s two-year radio and television broadcasting degree program provides students with the skills necessary for positions of employment in local and regional radio and television stations. Students receive hands-on training with much of the same equipment found in today’s broadcast industry. The college’s radio station, WLKL, gives students first-hand experience and on-air time each term they’re enrolled.
