Colt 'with an attitude' recovers for win
BY BRIAN NIELSEN, Sports Editor bnielsen@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- Leading most of the way, Freddie Patton Jr.’s talented but sometimes irritable colt seemingly had ruined things, breaking stride at the final turn.
“I was mad,” Patton said. “To have that happen that late, especially for no reason.”
The harness horse driver was not the only one who took exception when Ma Piper passed his Quick Thought on the break.
“He actually can’t stand horses around him, especially in front of him,” Patton said. “He has an attitude.”
So once Patton got Quick Thought back on stride, the 2-year-old gelding did the rest with enough track left to win a photo finish in the second division of the $2,359 Illini 2-year-old Colt Pace at the Coles County Fair harness horse racing.
The first of five days of races at the fair also included a track record for 2-year-old pacing colts as Matt Cox drove Shortstacked of the Ervin Miller stables in Springfield to a mile of 1:58 2/5 to break the mark of 1:59 set by Froggy Turner with Tom Simmons driving last year.
Quick Thought had become a season leader for Illinois county fair tracks with a 1:59 1/5 winning time.
The fast finish came after a slow start to the track. The pre-race parade and announcements began with Quick Thought still not present.
“I was talking and Tom Simmons noticed he didn’t have a tongue tie,” Patton said. “I was just running my mouth with the guys. You have to have a little fun doing this.”
Patton’s fun has included six wins in seven starts this year with Quick Thought, owned by Willie Scott of Raymond Miss.
Patton trains the colt who might need some time off.
“He’s a little sore,” Patton said. “I’m going to have to have the vet look at him.”
Patton also won the day’s first race with Pargenta, who has a couple of Illinois owners and took the first division of the Illini 2-year-old filly pace in 2:00.
Both of Patton’s Monday winners are to race again Wednesday in the Illinois Stallion Stakes scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
Post times for the other days are 12:30 p.m., including today’s five-race card that includes the track’s all-age record holder Armbro Barnes.
Monday’s fastest mile came on the last of eight races when Darla Martin drove Hopintosh, owned by Samuel and Shirley Glossup of Ardmore, Tenn., won the second division of the open pace for fillies and mares in 1:58 after a one-minute first half-mile.
Martin made it two straight women drivers after Cassidy Melloy drove Electric Highlight to a 2:05 1/5 win in the first division of the open pace for fillies and mares, making it four wins in the last seven starts for the Albion horse.
That was not the slowest winning time of the day as Michael Whitaker drove Windridge Dancer to a 2:09 3/5 race in which each of the four entries had a break sometime during the race including LW Jaynie Flyer, who had the lead until breaking stride in the back stretch.
