CAT hosting auditions for September show

Charleston — The Charleston Alley Theatre will hold auditions for Marsha Norman’s “’night, Mother,” at 7 p.m. Monday. Auditions will be at the theater, 718 Monroe Ave., Charleston.

“’night, Mother” is about a daughter, Jessie, and her mother, Thelma (referred to as “Mama” throughout the play). At the play’s beginning, Jessie calmly tells Mama that by morning she’ll be dead, as she plans to commit suicide that very evening.

At first Thelma refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie tidies the house and makes lists of things to be looked after, her sense of desperate helplessness builds. As the play continues, Jessie slowly reveals to her mother her reasons for her decision, how unhappy she is with her life and how thoroughly she has planned her own death, concluding in a disturbing yet unavoidable climax.

Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the original production opened at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., and starred Kathy Bates as Jessie and Anne Pitoniak as Mama.

“’night, Mother” is under the direction of Ruth Straith. Those auditioning will read from the script. Planned performance dates are Sept. 19-21 and 26-29.

For more information or to arrange an alternative audition, contact the director, Ruth Straith at 345-1437, the theater at 345-2287, or send e-mail to CATmail@consolidated.net.
