Pair hurt in one-vehicle wreck near Shelbyville

Two Oak Lawn residents were airlifted to a hospital following a single-vehicle accident Monday evening near Shelbyville.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Patrick Demke and Venessa Arroendo, both 20, were taken by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Memorial Medical had no record of either patient and therefore could not release reports about their status.

St. John’s Hospital in Springfield also had no record of the pair.

The sheriff’s office said Demke was ticketed for driving under the influence and driving too fast for the conditions.

According to the sheriff’s office, Demke was driving a vehicle south on County Road 2200E, also known as Lithia Springs Road, when he “lost control and hit an embankment.”

The Shelbyville Fire Department said it assisted the Shelby County Rescue Squad in extricating the driver and the passenger, Arroendo, from the smashed vehicle.

The sheriff’s office did not indicate whether Demke and Arroendo were wearing seatbelts.
