Mattoon Lions Club honors three with Melvin Jones Award

MATTOON — Lions Clubs International Foundation and Lions around the world exceeded their campaign challenge goal of $200 million for global blindness-prevention program. Funds raised during Campaign Sight First II, a three-year worldwide campaign, will save or restore the vision of more than 37 million people around the world.

As a result of the recent White Cane Sales, the Mattoon Lions Club was able to contribute $3,000 to the Sight First II campaign. This earned the club the privilege of awarding three Melvin Jones Award to outstanding, long-term club members. Those awards were presented at the club’s annual picnic at the Lytle Park Lions Club pavilion. Recognized were Dale VonBehrens, John Greathouse and Jack Keth.

At least $100 million of CSFII funds will be granted thru LCIF’s SightFirst program to contain and eliminate the leading causes of avoidable blindness, including cataract, the leading cause of preventable blindness.

Another $50 million will be used to combat new and emerging threats to sight, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and low vision. Remaining funds will be used to fund research and rehabilitation initiatives.
