School registration kicks off starting Friday in Charleston district

CHARLESTON — Students who will attend schools in the Charleston school district for the 2008-09 school year can register either Friday or July 28 in the cafeteria at Charleston High School.

The Friday registration session will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the July 28 session will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Parking for the sessions will be in the CHS west parking lot and entry to the cafeteria will be through the building’s north doors.

The registration includes students who will attend special education programs in Kansas, Humboldt and Mattoon. The centrally located registration sessions allow families to register students and pay fees at the same time, including if there are children in a family who will be attending different schools. After July 28, students will have to register at the schools they will attend, except special education students who will attend out-of-town facilities, who will register at the district administration building, 410 W. Polk Ave.

Registration fees will be $45 for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, $60 for middle school and $65 for high school. High school driver’s education fees are $60, and parking stickers for juniors and seniors at Charleston High School are $50.

Insurance coverage for all students is $40, and athletics insurance for CHS and Charleston Middle School athletes is $4 per athlete.

Registration requirements include updated physical and immunization for students entering kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade as well as any student new to the district. A school district nurse will be at the registration sessions to check records and medications any student might have to take during the school day.

Also, students enrolling in kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade will need a dental examination from a licensed dentist and a signed proof of examination certificate form from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Every student’s Social Security number must be listed on their registration cards.

Registration forms, school supply lists and other information are available on the district’s Web site, www.charleston.k12.il.us, and other information is available by calling the district administration building at 639-1000.
