Charleston musician releases solo CD, 'Just the 4 of Me!'

CHARLESTON — On his new solo CD, Clyde “C.W.” Sims is a one-man band. Or four men to be exact.

His recently recorded “Just the 4 of Me!” features Sims, of Charleston, on vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and guitar synthesizer. One track also features keyboard synthesizer.

Sims describes the CD as “eclectic” and “melodic type stuff,” differing from the “old rock ’n’ roll” he usually plays with Jim Easter and the Artistics.

The solo effort features songs Sims has written in the last year that didn’t fit with previous recordings.

“I’ve written songs for different bands, but I write a lot that’s not suitable for the bands,” he said.

His interest in acoustic recording combined with technological advances gave Sims the ideal opportunity to record a solo CD. Sims recorded and mixed the CD at his home on a Macintosh computer.

“Music is a weekend hobby,” he said. “(Recording the CD) became an extension of that. It took up a lot of spare time.

“I was extremely surprised, not in getting it down, but getting it mixed just right. I’m very happy with how it turned out. If I complain at all it’s because I’m not an expert singer, but I was determined to do it myself.”

Although he is selling copies of the CD, creating a compilation of his work was not about making money.

“It’s a self-fulfillment thing,” he said.

It’s also a message to other budding musicians.

“For any musician out there, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars (to record a CD),” he said.

CDs are available for $10 by contacting Sims at 345-2624 or simsstudio@yahoo.com. He also has them available at the band’s performances. Jim Easter and the Artistics has several upcoming shows in August. Check their Web site www.jimeasterandtheartistics.com for details.
