Bagelfest Parade getting bigger by the hour this year

MATTOON — It’s the biggest parade in this city and it should get even bigger in the next 24 hours.

And the Bagelfest Parade keeps getting bigger each year, said Mattoon Tourism Coordinator Angelia Burgett. There are about 100 parade entries expected to “Rock Around the Bagel” during the 2008 Bagelfest Parade.

“This is the largest one we’ve had since I started [in the tourism office]. We really want it to be better each year,” said Burgett.

The entry list is expected to increase because entries are accepted even on Saturday morning about one hour before the 10:30 a.m. parade starting time.

“If people want to come down to get in the lineup we welcome them to do so,” Burgett said.

Spectators should also expect to arrive early along the parade route from 21st Street to Logan Street, where the procession makes its home stretch to the Cross County Mall parking lot — a stopping point that helps prevent a logjam of people and vehicles along city streets.

“People can go to the Bagel Breakfast in the morning at the park and then have time to get ready for the parade. They should bring plenty of sunblock and water, too,” Burgett said.

The lineup period for parade entries starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burgett said all entries should show up in a timely fashion to their designated slots. New entries should get there early to help with the final organization of the parade.

This list of parade entries so far will produce a pre-start lineup stretching eight blocks along Western Avenue west of 21st Street. Parade participants should follow this lineup:
