FEMA releases storm aid figures for area

SPRINGFIELD — More than 170 people in five area counties applied for grants to help with storm damage after Illinois was declared a disaster area.

As of Friday, 662 Illinois residents had received a total of just more than $2.3 million in assistance, according to a news release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Several Illinois counties became eligible for federal aid because of flooding and other damage related to the storms that hit the state last month.

Pat Richardson, FEMA spokesman, said the agency doesn’t report the number of recipients or the amount of aid issued to individual counties. However, he said 173 people have applied for the aid in the five area counties, with Coles County leading the way with 64 applications.

Application numbers for other counties eligible for the aid were: Edgar, 50; Clark, 29; Douglas, 25; and Cumberland, 5.

According to the FEMA release, Illinois recipients have received just more than $2.2 million in grants for housing assistance for temporary living arrangements as well as home repairs and replacements.

Just more than $113,000 has been distributed to cover property loss, medical expenses, transportation and other disaster-related expenses that insurance doesn’t cover. The release also said 800 residents and 225 business owners have received Small Business Administration loans.

Illinois residents who sustained damage from the storms but who haven’t applied for assistance can call FEMA’s toll-free registration line, 1-800-621-3362; those with hearing or speech impairments can call 1-800-462-7585, the release said. Both lines are open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
