LETTER: Signs should have been put up at flooded road

As a concerned citizen of Coles County and a daughter-in-law to the late Ralph Idleman, I would like to know why no one has mentioned anything about the road not being closed with the proper signs? If the road was flooded the day before, the signs should have been displayed!

There has been talk that they ran out of signs. If that is true, it is a poor excuse to tell the family members.

It’s a disappointment that it took authorities [time] to put a “Road Closed” sign up after a death occurred.

Who is responsible for when and where the signs are put up? Did the road commissioner have knowledge of the flooded road and what actions were taken?

The cost of signs must be cheaper than a life lost or the cost of all the trained personnel it took to recover Ralph and his car.

These are questions the newspaper, TV coverage and sheriff’s department should have asked on June 5. Instead, they gave the impression to a lot of people that he carelessly drove through the water.

I know in this day and age that accidents happen, but this was a preventable accident.

All this being said, the family of Ralph Idleman would like to thank, from the bottom of our hearts, all the people that were involved in the recovery efforts.

We appreciate your time, skills and compassion.

" As far as officials go, I have no idea.

As part of the blog of the article about your Father-in-Law, I suggested that gates like those at Rural King and Fox Ridge be placed on both sides of the flooding of those roads. As for baricades, and I'm not implying Ralph was one, but their are those that will not heed a barricade, thinking they know better than those that put out the baricades. Some will drive around, or get out and move it to the side and go on. In some cases, had they taken time to put the baricade so that those that who would take heed wouldn't find themselves high water.

You need to take these questions to the Sheriff, and the appropriate road department in charge of that road. You'll get closer to the facts than you will here. "

" I feel like we as Americans tend to not want to take responsibility for our own actions and want to blame everyone else. I'm very sorry for your lose, but to complain that no signs were posted is poor to me. Drivers should know that if there is standing water on the road you shouldn't drive through it. To not take responsibility for this and to blame it on authorities is just a bit of a stretch. "

TigerRose wrote on Jun 30, 2008 6:35 AM:

" People with good common sense do not drive into a water filled road anyway, & have no need of any sign or barricade. Of course
those of us who live where the roads were flooded, witnessed that there are numerous people in this county who apparently do not possess this common sense. "

" I travelled that same road, probably an hour before the accident. I turned around and went another way. I also live on a road that occasionally floods and the township occasionally puts up a sign if I or one of the neighbors calls. I worry about non locals, out for an afternoon drive, or teens racing through the back roads, coming up over the hill and not seeing the water until it is too late to stop, or when my father was alive, an old man not paying as close attention as he should and getting confused. Signs should be put up and we should take responsibility and turn around and take another route. "

gringa wrote on Jul 1, 2008 10:46 AM:

" Come on, people, is it really necessary to be so insensitive in these comments? I agree that, in a perfect world, common sense would cause one to not proceed. Perhaps there were mitigating circumstances. Perhaps Mr Idleman simply didnt see the water, which is WHY Road Closed signs are supposed to be posted in the first place! Perhaps he was in the process of avoiding a deer running across the road. Perhaps a lot of things. Please keep in mind that a man has lost his life, and the family has a right to question authorities regarding the circumstances.

Amy Idleman raises a valid point as to why Road Closed signs were not posted prior to the accident. That area is prone to flooding. If it was flooded the day before the accident, why weren't the signs posted? Surely those responsible for public safety knew the dangers. As a matter of public safety, not closing that road could be compared to leaving a malfunctioning stop light at a busy intersection unattended for 24 hours. If the facts are as she states, it won't be long before a lawsuit if filed. Sorry to say, but it seems to me the family has a case. "

" So, we have decided that we should just forgo any and all responsibility of the people of the community? So, I can go walk on the sidewalk then decide to walk over the curb, fall, twist my ankle and then complain that there was no "Watch Your Step" sign posted? Responsibility for your own and actions and life have to be with held at some point. Again, sad this family lost their loved one and this is no attack against them, but we seem to want to just throw out personal responsibility of our lives. "

Harry Potter wrote on Jul 2, 2008 3:53 PM:

" You're absolutely right, das. People need to take more responsibility for themselves. My comments were addressed to the tasteless remarks made by TR at 6:35 yesterday AM. Regardless of what happened a family lost a loved one, and inferring he lacked common sense seems a bit over the top to me, at least that is how I read her post. "

" The archival evidence is now clear that Prescott Bush, the presidents grandfather, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from and collaborated with key financial backers of Nazi Germany.

That business relationship continued after Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 and even after Germany declared war on the United States following Japans bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941. It stopped only when the US government seized assets of Bush-connected companies in late 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act. "

That was so far out of left field it must have came from outer space. I missed it...what did that have to do with the article and comments that it was tagged to? "

" To defend Tiger Rose a little here, I'm sure she was commenting on a situation in her neck of the woods. A road was flooded and some people kept driving through it sending the water into a home where two people lived. These folks were in wheelchairs. She even went out and tried to get people to stop doing this and was laughed at for her trouble. Signs should have been placed there until the water went down. Maybe she should have explained this a little in her post, but her heart IS in the right place here. "

" GREEN BAY, Wis. - Brett Favre dismissed an ESPN report that he's considering coming out of retirement as "all rumor."

Favre responded Wednesday to the ESPN report by telling his hometown newspaper Web site, SunHerald.com in Gulfport, Miss., that "it's all rumor."

The paper reported that Favre sent a text message saying there's "no reason" for a media frenzy.

ESPN reported that an unidentified Packers source said the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.

"The Packers have no reaction," team spokesman Jeff Blumb told The Associated Press.

Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, didn't return a message seeking comment. Packers general manager Ted Thompson and McCarthy were on vacation.

Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career.

Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's "NFL Live" that Favre made similar comments to him.

"I know he has the itch to come back and play," Harris said. "If he will or not, I don't know."

The Packers plan to use Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season, and he's been leading the team through organized team activities and minicamp.

Rodgers has been groomed to take over for Favre since being selected in the first round in 2005, but has played sparingly.

"Aaron is our quarterback," Harris said. "Brett's retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldn't mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms."

Favre has two years left on his contract at an average of about $12.5 million per season. The Packers placed him on the reserve-retired list in the spring so his salary does not now count toward the cap.

Favre's commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-June when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 11-13.

Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith said then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict.

When he retired, a teary Favre said, "I've given everything I possibly could give to this organization, the game of football, and I don't think I've got anything left to give And that's it. I know I can play. But I don't think I want to."

But less than two months later, he told reporters he might be open to returning if Rodgers was injured.

Favre, a three-time MVP, leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275.

Rodgers, meanwhile, has stirred up controversy himself this week. In a Sports Illustrated article, the quarterback said he didn't feel pressure to connect with fans the way Favre did.

"I don't feel I need to sell myself to the fans," he said in the article. "They need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut."

.......

Just thought I'd follow the swing here.
LOL! "

And for cd, do a little research. I wouldn't rely on what anyone said on either side. I would read everything out there and then decide if it's all hooey.

No one every said Bush was a Nazi, worn a Nazi uniform or any other ridiculous thing, as Doh Doh is claiming that I said. The only charge is that Bush personally profited from Nazi financing.

There's just too much information out there for this to be a load of crap, as our friend Doh Doh seems to think.

I'm also sure that a lot of it is probably exaggerated, but the basic fact is that Prescott Bush was involved with the financing of the early Nazi party in Germany, despite all the denials from our friend. "

HARRY, I wasn't debating what you said about Prescott Bush. I commented on what that had to do with," LETTER: Signs should have been put up at flooded road By AMY IDLEMAN, Mattoon".

I have looked up Prescott Bush, and much of what you have stated is true. You're a sad person when you have to go back 70 years to throw trash at anyone. I wonder how many other families have possibly gained such monetary advantages from unethical practices. I wonder squeeky clean you would be after being put under the same microscope. Dirt is dirt whether it is a speck or a truckload.

My point was, What does anything about Prescott Bush have to do with whether a road was blocked in Coles County?

NOTHING "

Do you have to stink up every thread with your tin-foil hat conspiracies?

All that "information" on Prescott Bush is coming from the same couple of wacky sources- it's just being referenced back and forth in a self-feeding incestuous wacko circle.

Bush held 1 SHARE in an investment firm that held German Steel interests.

Bush did NOT personally select the investments nor was it illegal to hold German interests before the war.

After WWII broke out- Bush along with 6 other directors were told to remain in control of the firm by the New York Superintendent of Banks until the entire corporation was formally seized by the government in 1942.

Bush, nor any other of the participants were EVER charged with any wrong doing.
