Mattoon school district insurance costs to dip

MATTOON — Even though other expenses such as fuel continue to increase, the Mattoon school board on Monday approved a renewal of its liability and worker’s compensation insurance package that should result in a decrease of more than $20,000.

During the special meeting on the last day of the district’s fiscal year, the board agreed to a renewal of $293,595 with Indiana Insurance Company — a price down from $314,286 the previous year.

“The district continues to have really good loss history,” said Mark Donaldson of Dimond Brothers Insurance Agency in Mattoon, the school district’s insurance broker.

“If you’re a good account, you’re going to see a decrease.”

Assistant Superintendent of Business Tom Sherman said the package — equivalent to individual homeowner and auto insurance — covers all of the district’s buildings and vehicles, and includes worker’s compensation and school board liability insurance.

It does not incorporate employee health or life insurance.

Sherman said the conclusion of major construction projects in the district this year also factored into the renewal decrease.

“Our expenditures have gone down in this area,” he said.

Also at Monday’s special meeting, the board approved payment of the district’s end-of-the-fiscal-year bills.

Following a brief executive session, the board followed the recommendation of administrators and took unanimous action to require a physician’s examination to determine the “fitness for duty” of an employee identified only as “Employee AB.”

" Overheard at the meeting was the possible hiring of fitness guru Richard Simmons, for their planned "fitness for duty" for school employees.

All together now.... "
