Charleston team gets second at EIU basketball camp

CHARLESTON --One Charleston basketball team turned out to be too good for its Silver Division.

The Trojans’ other varsity team entry turned out to be too tired to win the Silver tournament championship in Sunday’s conclusion of the three-day Eastern Illinois University high school team camp.

Lovington avenged an earlier loss from the camp to win the Silver Division title 42-24 over the Charleston Gold team consisting of incoming juniors Brad Wheeler, Jason Lord and Dylan Doughty, sophomore Joey Miller and freshmen Colin Ferguson and T.J. Bell.

That Charleston team had gone 3-4 in the camp’s league play including a 24-point Saturday loss to Charleston Red.

Charleston Red, comprised of the upcoming school year’s seniors Derek Hennig, Jamel Johnson, Dylan Rose, Ryan Hale, Sean Parker, Blake Craft and Christian Hupp, went 7-0 in the Silver Division and then moved up to the Blue Division’s tournament where it lost a 51-39 first-round game to Evansville (Ind.) Reitz.

“I’m glad we moved up,” Charleston coach Trevor Doughty said. “We went through the other division undefeated. We just had a bad game. Every time I’ve been to camp I’ve had a team play at least one bad game and as I told our guys it’s just unfortunate ours came in the tournament.”

Charleston Red fell behind 12-0 and got a bit closer but lost by that same 12-point margin to Reitz, which had gone 1-6 in Blue Division games.

While the team of Charleston seniors on Saturday may have shown Charleston’s team of the future might not quite yet be the Trojans team of the present, the younger Charleston Gold team showed its promise with two tourney wins on Sunday.

In the Silver tourney’s semifinals, Charleston Gold fell behind Kewanee Wethersfield 12-4 and trailed 23-21 at halftime.

Then with the score tied 35-35, Joey Miller – the son of Eastern Illinois coach Mike Miller, scored the Trojans’ next nine points.

The sophomore guard got a fastbreak layup, a driving layup, another driving basket while being fouled for a three-point play and then another fastbreak basket building Charleston’s lead to 44-37 before the Trojans finished with a 50-41 win.

In the championship game Lovington jumped to a 20-5 lead and romped to the revenge win over Charleston Gold.

“I think a lot of it was our guys ran out of gas,” Doughty said. “We didn’t have any legs left and missed some shots early. It was Lovington’s second game and our third game. But those young guys have learned to work together this weekend.”

Lovington received a first-round bye in the six-team tournament going 5-2 in league play for second behind Charleston Red, which then played in the other division’s playoffs.

Charleston also had its freshman-sophomore Red team go 5-2 in league play and win one tournament game before losing the camp finale on a last-second shot.

This was one of three teams Charleston entered in the fresh-soph division.

“I’m thankful to (assistant) coach (Jim) Wood and coach (Brad) Oakley that we could have this many teams in the camp,” Doughty said.
