EIU recruit Garrett's status still uncertain

CHARLESTON -- Whether one of Eastern Illinois’ most impressive members of its 2007-08 basketball recruiting class plays for the Panthers in ’08-09 remains to be seen.

Daimon Garrett, a 6-foot-6 forward from Evansville Reitz is still waiting to see if he academically qualifies to play NCAA basketball as a freshman.

Reitz coach Michael Adams, who has his current team at this weekend’s EIU team camp, said three possibilities remain:

--Garrett could still be able to play for the Panthers this coming season.

-- He could attend Eastern while not playing as a freshman, similar to what used to be known as an NCAA Proposition 48.

-- Or if not qualifying academically, he could choose to play junior college basketball.

“I know I’m hoping for him,” Adams said. “He’s a great kid. He’s our career leading scorer, leading rebounder and leading shot blocker. If we wouldn’t have had Daimon we wouldn’t have been nearly as good.”

Garrett has played in Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association and Indiana North-South postseason all-star games.

He was one of five starters graduating this year at Reitz now looking for new stars as it for the second straight year plays at the EIU camp.

“I guess you could say we are starting over but I like our kids,” Adams said.

Playing in Indiana’s large enrollment Class 4A, Reitz might still have some college prospects. Evan Brinkmeyer played for the team as a freshman last season, coach’s son Drew Adams brings plenty of savvy and Clinton Happe also has good potential.

Eastern coaches are getting to see those players at their own camp and have maybe a pipeline with Reitz.

“Michael Lewis is my first cousin by marriage,” Adams said of the Eastern assistant coach and former Indiana university star. “I’m really a big fan of (EIU head) coach (Mike) Miller. They have a good program here.”
