Meinhart second in U of I Open

SAVOY -- For the second straight year Derek Meinhart, a 1996 graduate of Mattoon finished as the runner-up at the 55th University of Illinois Open.

Meinhart, who played at Eastern Illinois University where he graduated in 2001, led after the first day of the 36-hole tournament with a five-under-par 67 on the University of Illinois golf course. He led by two strokes over Josh Borchardt. Sunday Meinhart shot a 75 and missed a long birdie putt on No. 18 as Champaign’s Clayton Parkhill fired a 71 for a total of a 141, winning by just one stroke. Parkhill birdied No. 18 to win and became the youngest to have won two tiles, winning in 2004.

Other area golfers included Mattoon’s Craig Chaney, the 1999 champion. Chaney was in the first flight and finished with rounds of 77 and an 83 for a 160, good for a two-way tie for 12th place in the flight.

In the second flight Bruce McNary, a 1993 Arcola graduate who placed seventh in the state meet as a junior, had rounds of 78 and 79 for a 158, good for a three-way tie for fourth place in the second flight.

In the third flight Mattoon’s Ken Myracle shot an 83 Saturday and an 89 Sunday for a total of a 172, good for a three-way tie for 15th place.

In the Senior Championship Flight Charleston’s Jerry Myerscough had rounds of 82 and 80 for a 162, good for a two-way tie for third place.
