Annual 'Gather at the Gardens' walk is Saturday in Mattoon
For the JG/T-C
The First United Methodist Church of Mattoon will host its Annual Garden Walk, better known as “Gather at the Gardens,” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Five flower and one vegetable garden will be featured on the walk this year. Participating garden locations are as follows:
-- 920 Prairie Ave., Mary Reardon: A relaxing backyard filled with beautiful plants, a rock garden, bird feeders and benches on which to rest and enjoy the scenery.
-- 1009 Stinson Ave., Randy and Jill Atkins: Old-time charm is found in this garden, with hints of Thomas Kincade. Groupings of perennials, bright annuals and ornamental grasses surround the house.
-- 1416 S. 16th St., Vernon and Hope Doll: The Dolls have “backyard gardened” at this location for 61 years. The first few gardens were plowed by horse. Doll has many gardening tips to share.
-- 5 Brian Drive, Jim and Chrissy Leitch: The Leitchs have married the old with the new. A mixture of mature trees with new perennial gardens is shown. A newly constructed garden wall defines each planting area.
-- 26 Greenbriar, Bob and Mickie Walker: Many beautiful trees such as rhododendrons, Japanese maple and Southern magnolias can be found in this garden. Also, hydrangeas and knockout roses around the pool, as well as the crepe myrtle near the pond and golf course. Bronze statues also bring to mind the Walker children playing.
-- 601 Dakota Ave., Donna Lanman: This garden is created with a park-like atmosphere with different types of ornamental trees and flowering bushes. In the garden area are ornamental grasses, roses and hostas, with perennials and annuals. Relax in this backyard and be treated to lemonade and homemade cookies by the United Methodist Women. The Wilhe Pickit band will be present here with Christian music.
University of Illinois Extension master gardeners from Coles County will be at each garden to answer questions between 10:30 a.m. and noon.
