Dahnke plays in IBCA all-star game
By MIKE MONAHAN, Staff Writer mmonahan@jg-tc.com
BLOOMINGTON — Recent Martinsville graduate Heidi Dahnke scored five points in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A and 2A All-Star girls’ basketball game Saturday at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Dahnke. “I knew the four Teutopolis girls (Heather Pruemer, Nicole Rune, Kristin Runde and Mindy Wendt) and it was a good chance to get to know each other and play one more time at the high school level”
Dahnke was on the South team, which lost 79-75. The South trailed 43-28 at the half.
The teams entered the game in groups of five, playing about 12 minutes each until the final seven when they rotated in and out depending on how the coach wanted to substitute.
A six-foot-one first team all-stater who is headed to the University of Illinois at Chicago was 1-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. She pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists. The three free throws made tied with Benton’s Courtney Smith for the most free throws made on the team, which was 15-of-20.
The team practiced twice Friday and once Saturday at the Shirk Center. The South squad was coached by Matt Hampleton of West Frankfort.
“It was a really good fast paced game, faster than most games that we have had,” said Dahnke, who is at UIC now working out and taking classes. “It was fun playing with the more highly skilled players from entire state. It was kind of sad knowing it was my last high school game, but I am ready for a new chapter in my life.”
Pana’s Olivia Lett led the South with 15 points and was the only player to finish in double digits on the squad, which committed 29 turnovers and was 27-of-77 (.350) from the field. Lett was the South MVP.
Dahnke is the first area girls’ player to play in the game since Oakland’s Amanda Maxedon played in the 2003 game.
Dahnke was the Journal-Gazette/Times-Courier Player of the Year for the second straight year and she finished as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,903 points and is the school’s all-time (boys’ or girls’) rebounding leader with 1,143. She averaged 18.7 points, 11 rebound, 5.6 assists, 4.8 steal and 3.1 blocks for the 25-3 Lady Bluestreaks.
