EIU lands state champ sprinter



CHARLESTON -- Demarcus Brooks, who won three state titles in the 100-meter dash and added the 200 championship this year, has signed with Eastern Illinois’ track team.

The Springfield Southeast sprinter as well as Antioch hurdler Lamarr Pottinger are EIU coach Tom Akers’ two most recent recruits to sign national letters of intent.

Brooks comes to EIU as a heralded sprinter. He won the IHSA Class AA state title three straight years in the 100 dash winning his senior title with a time of 10.68 seconds. His personal and school record is 10.4.

Brooks also capped his career with a state title in the 200 meters winning with a time of 21.37.

Pottinger signs with EIU after qualifying for back-to-back IHSA state meets for Antioch. Pottinger qualified in the 110 meter high hurdles and posted a time of 14.95 in his prelim heat at the state championships. His personal and school record came in the sectional meet where he finished with a time of 14.2.

EIU has now signed eight athletes for the 2008-09 track and cross country seasons. Previously signing with the Panthers were Tyler Carter of Tuscola, Reid Basting of Normal West, Connor Kustief of Dundee-Crown, Sean Wiggan of Waubonsie Valley, Matt Feldhake of Effingham St. Anthony and Jordan Patterson of Williamsville.
